On Earth Day 2014, an Eco-Magical appeal to magical people everywhere!

Earth Hour 2014 (29March’14)- We are a small group of Pagans & magical people stand at the heart of London, on the banks of river Thames, between St.Pauls Cathedral & Tate Modern Gallery. You might say, we stand between the world of religion and art! And that is where I finally made my heart-felt  (long-term) appeal known to all.

I make a big request to all magical practitioners, Pagans, witches, Wizards, Shamans and all-

“Please make Eco-Magic part of your rituals, Ceremonies, festivals and magical events! We have the power and the energy ..and we can change the World.. by making this conscious decision to give a tiny part of our magical practices towards Eco-Magic!”

This year (2014) as we were gathering for our annual Earth-Hour social walk and eco-ceremony by the river Thames, we actually witnessed the fact that St.Paul’s Cathedral outside lights were all switched off at 8.30pm and switched back on again at 9.30pm. This is the Earth Hour, when in every country (local time) we are encouraged to turn lights and all electrical (non-essential) equipment off..to save a bit of the energy-drain we put on the planet! And we’re glad to see a big Christina establishment like St.Pauls Cathedral following it. So there’s no excuse for any one else…is there?!

Best wishes

Calling something Wicca – then, now and tomorrow!

Calling something Wicca..

Calling something Wicca..

I came across a post by a friend that started, “Claiming that things are Native American when they are not (or claiming that things are Wiccan when they are not) is a potentially harmful practice. It erases the real practices of the group in question. If the practice is harmful, it blames that group for originating it…”

I agree on the matter of the reputation of  a particular group being ill-affected.  However there is much I disagree. Can’t speak for Native American traditions..but I can for Wicca..as I have been practising Wicca for almost 20 years…

Wicca itself is a very young path (1950′s ) and has so many other religious and spiritual practices built into it..   (Gerald Gardner travelled parts of Asia, and picked up ideas before coming back to England.. and surfacing with `Wicca’  - Many already know he instilled naturism into it, as he was a follower of that).

So in fact, much of Wicca is actually `not wicca’ .  And if within a short time of its `origins’, it can produce branches (Gardnerian, Alexandrian)…it follows that in a few more decades, Wicca will have produced ever more branches, and some of it may not even be called Wicca.

Think about all the other old religions..and how they have seeded and created sects, branches etc.  And you can see that it WILL happen to Wicca too..  if it continues to grow as a religious path.   That much of it, history assures us (comparison to other religions).

Why even go that far..!  Wiccan Covens have autonomy and are governed by its Coven High Priest & High Priestess – who can and do `add’ their own practises and wisdom to the subsequent generation of Wiccans they cultivate (prepare, initiate and tran).  So despite keeping the same copy of Book of Shadow (copying it and handing it down), potential and an avenue for slow change is already built int Wicca.

So I like to end this blog post by saying..

1) Spirituality will and does evolve.. and we should let it.. and evolve with it.. because that’s what nature does…!

2) No one owns spirituality or a religious path ..

If someone comes to us (individually) and asks for help or guidance, we can give it… That much is within our reach..  But if we observe something else going on out there, and no one has asked for our help..   we may intrude and offer our wisdom..but chances are it won’t be welcomed.. or valued.

So calling something Wicca, when it is not..  well, that;s neither here nor there..

One of the ongoing strands of myths and misunderstandings, difficulties and despairs, appreciations and accusations – that I observe in the lives of any Spiritual, magical or Esoteric Enterprising person is this very matter!

In the Esoteric world, many are `taught’ or pressured into being `humble’ and there is also a big push towards being seen as non-materialistic. Too much Charisma can be interpreted as sleeziness. Self-Importance can be mistaken for Ego. Ambition is mistaken (often) for Greed!!

Where as in the enterprising & business realms, one has to show confidence, self-assurance, charisma, ambition. This is especially true to stand-alone self-employed Entrepreneurs. They have no one to stand on but their own tools, experiences and expertise. After all that is what they `sell’ – as a product or as a service to others.

The Esoteric Entrepreneur does not talk about other people, products or services (unless that is what he/she is selling).
The Esoteric Entrepreneur simply comes at it from a confident, self-assured, personal experience point of view.. he or she lives by example. He or she has to live by example, using the very products and services s/he is promoting and selling.

And as I said, this often mistakenly comes across as `Egotistical, Self-obsessed’.

It is not the Esoteric Entrepreneur – the one selling a crystal wand, a new age shop, a tarot reading, a self-help magic book or other such things – who needs to change. S/he already has. – in taking that brave step to make a living out of these subjects.

It is the Esoteric, pagan, holistic & magical communities that need to change – and start differentiating between these issues.

Earth Hour 2014: Eco-Ceremony & Social in Central London – 29th March

Earth Hour .. only a few weeks to go.. Saturday 29th March.

We have our annual open event in Central London!    In the past I have facilitated a Candle-lit walk along the river Thames.   This time, we are simply gathering in one spot – outside  the Tate Modern Gallery (there are some patches of green area..with trees!! That is where we had our outdoor event in October’13)

Earth Hour 2014- central london ceremony & social - FREE

Earth Hour 2014- central london ceremony & social – FREE

So  come and join me and my Eco-friends ..from about 7.3pm onwards..  for meeting & greeting..and socialising.    And around 8.30pm, when the actual Earth Hour begins..  we will gently go  into a small meditation, followed by an Eco-Ceremony  (may last abut 20-3omins).   Then we shall continue with socials, an outdoor Picnic and merriment..

I feel it important, that while so many of us care about the Earth and eco-causes, and fight ever day to resolve make the problems of our World,  we also must create time for being Happy, to connect with like-minded humans, strengthen our ties,  power up one another’s motivations and  spread hope – that the World will get better!!

Those will be the focus of the Ceremony.  So people of any and all religions & faiths welcome.

There are no protests, no campaigns…no slogans..   Only a few evening hours of total positivity & peace.

All I ask is that those who come do so with an open & tolerant mind, and with peace & harmony in their hearts.

This is a family-friendly event.  So do bring your small children .(wrap up warm though!   It gets cold by the open spaces of the river Thames).

Do bring picnic food & drinks to share ..:-)

-Mani Navasothy

ps.  Earth Day (22nd April) & World Peace Day (21st Sept) –   we also organise a Family Picnic for these. So  follow this blog, or keep an eye on my websites for details of those other events!  :-) )

Blessing of the Fleet – Isis Navigatum Ceremony by river Thames (sunday 2nd march)

Isidias Navigatum Blessing the Fleet ritual 2014 London (c)Mani Navasothy

Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony (Isidias Navigatum)

  • Sunday 2nd March 2014
  • Richmond (by the river Thames)
  • 1pm to 4.30pm

This annual ceremony was held at the start of the Spring time in Ancient Egypt, to gain the blessings of Goddess Isis upon the ships and boats (Fleet) – so that they may go forth, find commerce, resources and wealth and bring them back.     You will have heard the saying, `waiting for my ship to come in’ – a saying that indicates a person waiting for his /her good fortunes to arrive.   Well, in order for ships to come in they must first be sent out – and with blessings and good plans.  We are adapting the  old ceremony to suit the times and place we now live it!  In this ceremony, we will bless the `fleet’ and place our hopes and wishes of good fortune and success in the ventures we are starting as Spring approaches. We then set the ships to sail (some will be sent.. other larger models will be pulled back, so as not to litter river Thames).

Ritual outline (tbc): A statue of the Goddess will be carried to the water. Women may offer mirrors so that Goddess Isis may see her beauty. We will pour milk on the banks   then sprinkle the statue with precious perfumes & flowers. As the final part of the ritual, a small replica boat(s) will be filled with spices and other magical items,  and sent (out to sea) as an offering to the Goddess Isis.

New: We are also adding small images / models of wild life & animal in danger, as a way of seeking the protection of Goddess Isis for these endangered species!

Practical  details

Meet us at Richmond Train station (just by coffee shop!).   Meetng 1pm.. We’ll walk together to the ritual spot by the river..for ceremony & feasting.  We expect to be back by station at 4.30pm..  and visit a cafe or pub to socialise (in warmth).

Please wear absolutely sensible, warm, water poof cloths..  Our rituals go ahead whatever the weather..  So no need to double check ..if its snowing or  blowing storms! Just turn up and take a chance..  Magic is supposed to be wild and tied with nature!!

All are Welcome to attend these . Do contact us and contribute with your creativity, knowledge & magic for these new explorations..

Wiccan Journeys & High Priestly thoughts on covens

I was giving a talk at one of the pagan moots in NW London last night (Staines Moot)..  The title was `Wiccan Journeys: There and back..and there again..!’.

It mainly outlined my (thus far) journey in the Wicca path..  how I became interested, how I became an initiated Wiccan, reaching my stage (and responsibility) as a High Priest, running training covens & groups, initiating new Seekers and so on.       The talk also covered my back and forth journeys – as I have not always felt like a `wicca’ (but always a `Witch / Magician’ !)  There are times when I have slipped out of the coven life and wiccan communities – and gone to do other magical things.. like starting `Hern’s Tribe- outdoor shamanic / eclectic group’   (the more recent one being the `woodland wicca rituals’  and the `Thames-Isis rituals) – see links at the bottom.

Talk at Ankerwycke – wiccan journeys – there and back and there again – mani navasothy 2014

Well, this morning, I caught on to some debates that have been going on…about the good/ bad experiences, the ego and hierarcrhy of High Priests, High Priestesses, and coven leaders.

Needless to say, I have some deep thoughts on this ( I never like to hear anyone bad-mouth Wicca ..especially hard working Coven leaders..!)

Here are some of my responses:

Taking pot shots at Wiccan Hierarchy?

No one is forcing anyone into a particular tradition, path or system of beliefs.. But if one is entering a system, they should learn to be aware of its exiting form, structure, rules, guidelines.. – before criticising it, attacking it, or trying to change it. !

My HPS once told me, `walk in the footsteps f others..see what entails..before criticising what they do’ !

I appreciate that people may have had bad experiences from individuals or groups..but unless you have ever organised events, rituals, groups..and run things for long periods of time… no real wisdom is gained.

I get a little tired of people ranting on about Wiccan Hierarchy, and taking pot shots at the roles of High Priests & High Priestess. They are part of that path and system.. Learn it, understand why it’s there in the first place.. before tearing it apart. And if you are compelled to tear it apart.. I ask why? Is it because of a personal grudge, bad experience, or one;s own ego not being fed? -

The training of Coven Leaders:

Leadership of anything is always a double-edged sword.. It is there to serve the people.. but abused, it can harm the people.. To quote a line from Spiderman, `With great power comes great responsibility’

Serious covens filter interested people .. work out their commitment, dedication, loyalty etc..before even taking anyone on as trainees…and then after a year or even many years…initiate them…(into their tradition and their coven!)

It takes many years of practice ..before those initiates reach a stage of taking good personal responsibility and also that of others..and the HP / HPS stats is a `teaching position’ – it’s NOT handed down like confetti.

Even after reaching that stage.. they then undergo more months / years of `on the job mentoring’ to become `good’ HP & HPS.. Anyone who’s got this far ..then goes out and starts their own coven..trains others..initiates others.. !

This is the long hard path in an ideal world.. Old ideals and standards are dying out with those people who held it.. They have tried to pass those on.. and that wisdom survives.. just about..!

——-

So there you have it..  just some immediate responses..  But no doubt, we shall all come to this topic..again and again…and again :-)

Looking back at Gaia Conventions of 2007,2008 & 2009!

When the Pagan Federation discontinued its National Conferences after the one of 2004, many wondered what will happen. Many of the districts of the PF began to hold local district conferences. Following suit, PF London also held its district conference in 2007. Instead of calling it just a district conference, I took the initiative (as the then PFL Event Manager) and gave it a name and an identity – `Gaia3 convention’ and a tag-line, `Earth, Environment, Kinship’, for that’s what the Convention was all about! This was done to bring additional awareness to ecological matters, because I had observed, at the time, that pagans in London seem to talk a lot of honouring and worshiping the Earth and natural world, but didn’t seem to put the kind of emphasis on such ecological matters – that far less earth-centred companies or other non-pagan groups were doing. It was crazy that there had never been an Earth-themed conference of any sort – not at least in the previous 12-15 years (to my knowledge).

Like our facebook page for GT

Like our facebook Page

I was new to convention organising, but did my best, with the help of the PFL Events Team and my District Manager Jean Williams! PF London didn’t have more than a few hundred pounds of funds, so an idea was conjured up – to seek temporary `loans’ of small amounts (£25-£50 ) per person from willing volunteers of the pagan community. And we raised over £500 – enough to put a deposit for the hiring of a large hall at ULU (University of London Union). The PF itself saw our efforts and gave us an equal amount as a loan also. Needless to say, we had a good ticketed turn-out of attendance, and covered all costs, and paid all the people back their `loans’. It was all informally and efficiently done. In essence, it was a Convention funded by the people!

At Gaia3 convention of 2007, we had several interactive features, such as a `Wyrd-Wall’, `Walking Witches & Wizards’ and `Pandora’s Box’. In the first, convention goers tied a small string with their thoughts/ intents, onto a `wall’ to make a random and complex web of strings. (These were used in the 4th Convention in `Wyrd-i’ in 2010). The Walking Witches were Stewards who went around befriending new comers and making them comfortable, and the Pandora’s box was a feed-back box ( a reverse of the concept!). There was also the `Copper exchange’ where each person had 5 small coins (1 penny coins) and through out the day, each person would `exchange’ his or her coins with another convention-goer. All coins were collected and magically committed to the river Thames at the end of the Convention. It symbolised the exchange of energies (and a reason to interact with one another).

There followed 2 further annual conventions. In 2008, we had the `Gaia-Fortuna Convention’ probably another first (using a double-barrel name of 2 Goddesses). It took place around the Autumn (harvest) time, and concentrated on Harvest and good Fortunes; The 3rd in the series was at Midsummer in 2009, and suitably named `Gaia-Sol convention’ , with a focus of integrating the masculine fiery energy of the Sun wit Gaia.

Year 4 saw the idea of kinship and interconnectedness evolve- and there was only one way it possibly have moved towards – to the concept of Wyrd. This is the magical web of Fates that connect all of us. So it was called `Wyrd-i convention’. People asked me what the `i’ stood for, and wondered if it meant the roman numeral 1? Maybe, or maybe it stands for `imagination’, because creative imagination is key to the working of magic!

Last year, there were no Gaia-related conventions, because the Pagan Federation held a national major conference in London to celebrate its 40th anniversary! However, last year, on the new moon of Aquarius (star sign with humanitarian qualities), we finally formed `Gaian Times’, to continue the magical and sociological work initiated by the Gaia Conventions.

Below are a full list of Speakers, Experts, Workshop facilitators and Performer – who participated in the 3 Gaia conventions, and supported its objectives.

As this GT#10 issue comes to you, there is a Conference taking place in London, hosted by Prince Charles and the Prime Minister of United Kingdom, bringing together 50 of the world leaders – for the purpose of taking serious action to stop illegal Wildlife trading!   We are hoping it’s going to be more than just talk!

Am thrilled to have contributions from Aurelia Anyika (Keyan origins), whom I met at the last `Peaceful protest outside Chinese Embassy in London (to urge China to stop Ivory trade!).  Aurelia is a fellow activist and Eco-Campaigner, passionate and serious- and I look forward to reading more of her work!

We also have Lisa Du Fresne starting a new column in Gaian Times, called Animal Communications (she’s writing from Canada)!  And Renard (Richard) Fox writes from America, about the Druid Path, and shares a poem too!

In case you are wondering, Gaian Times is not all about animals. It’s about people too.  And following on from my report of the London’s Erotica festival (GT issue#9), am very glad to be covering SAFE – the Safety network for people who work in the sex industry (Standards Against Female Exploitation). Angela Belassie has been kind enough to provide the feature with various facts and even a case study.

There is also a feature on the Psychology & Counselling Support being provided for people in cardiff, and Bristol, in our `Talk of the Bay’ feature.

Of course we’ve just had Valentine’s day..  So we have not just the photo of `Canada’s Sweetheart’ Angela La Muse, but she has so kindly answered some of my questions, and provided professionally taken photos of her – just for GT.  (yes, me going to Canada to do a photo shoot with her just was taking too long!)

Vathani Navasothy writes about giving an MOT for your love relationships (she’s a Professional qualified Counselor of almost 24 years, and one of the founding members of Gaian Times!)

Next issue is out just before Earth Day – by mid-April!  It’ll also cover all the esoteric excitements of the Beltane festivities, and more chit-chats on Love, marriages and relationships!
