Jupiter conjuncts Sun 19june2013

This is a fantastic astrological aspect between two of the largest stellar bodies in our Solar system. Yes, it happens every year..   but this one is taking place in Gemini (28 degrees)..  so the special boost is for Gemini’s – though by planetary rulership, it will have an influence on Leos (ruled by the Sun) and Sagittarius (ruled by Jupiter).

But everyone will benefit from this..  so much so…and it is a big symbol of hope, faith and inspiration…that I just had to do a special blog to flag it up

In a few days, of course, Jupiter will move to a new sign…Cancer!

Royal aspects

..and interestingly, Prince William of  Great Britain…2nd in line to the Throne is about to have not just his birthday…but going to have the birth of his own child in a few weeks time..  His child (daughter?) is going to have Jupiter in her own sign..  Cancer..  !     Prince William celebrates hs own birthday on Solstice day …so I feel he’s going to be one with a lot of power..  and now with these aspects brewing, so will his to-be-born-soon child..   3rd in line to the Throne!   Sorry Prince Harry. You’ll just get knocked back by one position!)

Hern’s Tribe Summer gathering 2013 – Swearing on the Horns (adapted) ritual

It’s been known that an old custom of `Swearing on the Horns’ used to take place in the High Gate area every year between 17th and 19th Century.  For the most part  these proceedings seem to have a farcical element (if not all) to it.   However,  Hern’s Tribe began to re-interpret and  enact this Ceremony some years ago, at Queen’s Woods (along with the `Windsor Hern ritual’ – another old custom that is said to be done for the well-being of the Sovereignty of this land).

Join us for a special Summer event outdoors in North London, at Queen’s Woods, for this Ceremony. Participate in it, and swear on the Horns of Hern, for your well-being, and that of the land, and make an oath of your promise to Hern or the Green-Man of the land in return.. to do your honorable best for the land and it’s people!

Afterwards, join in with festivities, drumming & singing, and Summer feasting.. and perhaps some Story telling …as the evening approach… of Fairies, Dragons, and magical realms.

Bring drums, masks, horns (if you have any), food & drinks, and any poetry & songs to share!

Time: 2.00pm to 4.00pm (core ceremony). Socials ongoing afterwards till last person leaves!

How to get there: Get to `Highgate tube station’ (northern line), then to main road ( Archway Road). Turn in to Wood Lane, which becomes Queen’s Wood Road half way through. On the left hand side, at this bend is a formal entrance (with sign board) to the park. We’ll have ribbons tied up to mark the way!

share vs clutter in internet

You’ve done it.. I;ve done it..and many million people have done it..or about to do it! I am of course talking about posting a picture, a blog, a video, a quote etc..  basically anything that adds even an extra 1 byte of data (well, these days, what with everything being High Definition, High Resolution..  High Fidelity.. and Hi-tech..   even a single photograph posted online in a typical social media network site can be some thing like 100 Mega Bytes!   That’s more info-packaging than even the computers that were onboard  the rockets that took Man to the Moon first..).

So if you share one album…of a party or a night out.. say 10-20 photos, it can be easily over 1 Giga Byte of data…loaded onto someone else’s sever (let’s admit this – apart from government or research bodies, military and other highly independent people.. most of us don’t have our own servers that are connected to the internet (or IS part of the internet!) Everyone (big companies, Internet service providers ) are offering so much `free space’ (in their servers!).. we just take them.. consume them..gobble them up..  with so much multi-media.

Forget a picture painting  a thousand words.. In this age, it  is a case of a Photograph that can take up the space of  million words! – in terms of data storage!

Info-consuming society

Everyday, bodies like Youtube boast that several thousand new videos have been uploaded the previous day..  Blogging platforms like WordPress boast that several hundred new blogs had been added the previous day (like this one! yes am guilty too).

If all the data & photos were to be printed every day ..on paper…can you imagine how much paper it will consume?  Then we’ll all be campaigning.. about how it’s using up forests..(paper is organic…comes from pulped plant matter! It’s why we recycle paper after all! So we don’t use up new forests ..erm right!)

Lucky, we don’t print everything …instead we upload them..  to websites, social media sites.. or save them on our hard drives, discs, solid state microchips …!

But all those things are physical objects..   servers are large computers that hold websites..   so are social media sites.. (Google alone has millions of computers around the world in large buildings…all kept cool.. powered by electricity! Imagine how many computers & servers Companies like Facebook must have.. to keep up with all the data people are uploading every second!!)

We might think.. we are not printing..so it ‘s environmentally sound..but we are consuming power, storage space, and power for maintenance for those trillions of computers!   Well, that’s the eco-crisis aspect of this matter.

There is also the `sharing’ on social networks!

Gone are the days (which was only  a few years ago in fact) when people wrote about themselves, what they are feeling, thinking,, etc on their status updates and `walls’. Now majority of posts are `sharing’ photos, slogans, quotes, words or wisdom..and quite a million bytes of `here today- saved for eternity-but no-one cares’  information!! :-p

Data storage – paperless society

People took months and years to write books..  after research…Now online publishing is so fast, that thoughts are being published without any sort of review, editing, measuring etc.  In the old days, much will fall on the cutting room floor, or the postman will return that big manuscript to the author for the umpteenth edit again. wanna be authors just give up after that many rejects..  Paper and publishing standards are saved!   Not any more..   We upload..  consume gigabytes of server space.. on Amazon, facebook, youtube and…I wont’t even start on Google!    (repository of all inline knowledge and quite a lot of the rubbish we all upload!!)

Good news is…technology is getting better..and better. So data storage devises (hard drives, micro-chips) are getting smaller ..but holding more data.   So we can consume more ..  And of course research is going on about storing data on micro-crystals and quantum bits (Q-bits?) – atoms and molecules whose spin and various quantum numbers can be fixed..ie information.. equivalent to the  1.1.1 0.0.0.0 1.0.    (on-off switches that are the basis of binary systems and all data storage of computers!)

Brilliant..  we can pack even more terabytes of information on to quantum-crystals embedded in our  fingernails, ear-lobes…and  belly-buttons  (there’s a thought. Belly-button finally gets a use again after becoming obsolete at birth?!)

Storage may be okay …but we’re still adding data..  and the more freedom we have, more rubbish seems to get through and gets saved…for eternity..  for future-man or woman or alien to download ..read and …erm.. choke? ?!

Look …741 words already (so says my wordpress editor, as I write this)…and this is going to get saved for posterity… It will be here in the net, etherial floating in Q-bit realm.. decades after I am long dead.. (Even if I stop paying for the domain..and wordpress deletes it..   Google will have saved it somewhere…or a new Company called Trooble will have sprung up.. probably the son-of-google.. and taken up where Google leaves.. (if it ever will).

Quantum storage & Know-it-all computers

Oh another (related?) matter-  People keep saying..and thinking that  we can one day keep in record  everything we know..  and I am talking about quantum-Physics here (not social media)..  the location and speed of every single particle..  in the universe..  !   People say that at that point, a computer that holds that much of information…about everything in the universe…can predict anything! (A God-Computer?)

But sadly..  that is not possible..  If a computer records all the info about everything in the Universe… it has to put it on to a magnetic tape, a DVD disc,  micro-chip, a quantum-crystal-array or something physical!   Now here’s the thing..   holding that much of info will change the nature of that storage device… and where will the computer record that info? on the same chip? or anther crystal?

It just isn’t possible..  laws of quantum-mechanics don’t allow such things..  (observer effect)… unless of course the Higgs reveals new things about those laws.. ! (that’s another matter).

.. so where was I?   Yes, 989 words..Nope..  as I type it, the word count has changed.. (Observer effect at work :-p )

Okay some of this is so off the wall /page…and into flights of science-fiction & fantasy…but the problem remains..

We are consuming more info (mostly useless) and uploading even more data (more than half of it utter rubbish).

It’s not adding real value to the lives of people..! We already know those words of wisdom.. and those famous quotes…and have imagined a Witch & a Fairy flying naked through magical forest…and a swirly-burly Alien meditating (!?) in hyper-space or another moon..   !   Yes, those shared pictures are pretty..  but do they add value to other people’s lives? Do they solve their emotional problems at hand..that they really are not putting up on their status line anymore…for fear of being ridiculed or worse ..bullied?  Do those  `shares’ and `likes’  really bring people together..? or are we just playing lip-service to it al that come on our screen..    but hope that our own shares get read by thousands of others..? (another debate…!)

Do me a favour..  in fact ..do the world a favour..   and the future` Trooble -son of Google’  a favour..

Soora Por (meaning `Demon war) is a annual  Hindu festival..  that takes place in late Autumn, after Diwali (festival of Light). It is the culmination of a highly sacred week of prayers and rituals called the `Kanthashasthy fasting’ dedicated to the warrior god Murugan (also known as Karthikeyan, Velavan and many other names).

Murugan is the son of Shiva & Parvathi, and brother of the elephant headed god Ganesh. Murugan was born by the act of god Shiva opening his third eye and 6 divine sparks shooting out, and settling on 6 lotus flowers in a lake. Each spark then became a small baby and were nursed by sacred nymphs of the lake. When Shiva’s wife the Goddess Parvathy went to visit them, she embraced them all, and all 6 children amalgamated and became one child – Murugan!

Sooran Porr is the day when Murugan defeated a major demon (`Sooran’) in a battle (`Porr’). Hence the name `Sooran Porr’ – meaning `Demon War’. During this war, the demon is said to have attacked the god Murugan several times, and each time was defeated by being beaded. And following each beheading, the demon sprouted another head and came to attack the god Murugan again. Finally the god not only struck his head off with his sacred spear (called `Vel’) but split his chest, where upon the demon shape-shifted into a mango tree. This too tried to attack the god, and Murugan split the tree truck open with his sacred spear once more. And from the split tree, a Cockerel and a Peacock flew out (aspects of the demon), to attack the god as a last resort. Murguan immediately tamed the Peacock and turned it into his carrier, and transformed the Cockerel into a Victory-flag.

This is why in all graphical representations, Hindus depict this Warrior God Murugan as being seated on a Peacock, and holding a flag with a picture of a Cockerel on it.

The battle itself is re-enacted every year in Hindu Temple grounds all over the world, using idols and large statues  (Giants) of the god Murugan and the demon. Devotees fast for the 5 preceding days, and on the last day, attend the temple, and carry these idols and giant statues as part of the festivities and processions. The enactment can take anything from half an hour to a few hours, as each stage of the battle is carefully attended to. It is usual for the head Priest to stand by the idol or statue of the god Murugan and `use the sacred spear’ to attack the `Demon’. Usually it takes about 10-12 devotees (highly strong men) to carry he large statue of the Demon, and to put it through various rigorous battle movements – of attacks, withdrawals, threats, swings and turns.

The exact date of this `Sooran Por’ varies according to the Nakshathra positions (Hindu astrology has 27 Nakshathra positions through which the Moon passes through each month, in addition to the 12 zodiacs and 12 house positions), but it usually falls towards the middle of the month of November, which has the name `Karthikai’ and hence the god himself has another name deriving from the month,`Karthikeyan’.

Going incognito in Chrome-2

The internet is becoming a very `dangerous’ place !

Am not sure if you are even aware – that Google Chrome, an internet browser – has settings for browsing in a private mode (called Incognito mode) where it does not save cookies, or even more fundamentally – you can erase the browsing history, as well as any files that are in the temporary folder and clogging up more and more of your computer memory (temp files are only useful …when you have visited a website, and want to visit it again..  days or weeks later..and want it to be a few seconds faster!  It can be cleared every day…without affecting your internet browsing).

So here, I’m showing (using screen capture) how to do both of these..

A.   How to go incognito in Google Chrome browser

You basically do this, as soon as you have clicked and opened the Chrome.. (before going to any websites).    When you have finished the internet session, just close it. But remember to do this each time you open the browser.

1. Open your Chrome browser.. Look at the far right…top corner.    You’ll see  3 small stripes. This is the button for the `settings’.    Click this to select.

Here is a close-up of the top-right corner.

2.  A small `dialogue’ box (with options) will open up on the right hand side..  It will look a bit like this.   The 3rd line in it will say something like `New incognito window’. Select that. A new browsing window will open up.   (The previous one will also be open.  Make sure you go into the previous one and close that!)

3. The new window will have the following symbol.. on the top- left hand corner.     ( a man wearing glasses and hat..  bit like a Detective under cover!) . While this symbol is there, you know you are in Incognito mode!

B.   How to wipe out History (and delete temporary files) from your Chrome Browser

Every time you visit a website – any website –  it’s files are copied into your browser’s files (and into your computer!) .  These files stay in your computer’s memory (in temporary folder) ..forever!  - unless you clear them!     What’s more, a full trail / record of every site and every page you visited…will also be kept.  (The `History’ of your internet browsing!).      If someone else were to use your computer, they can find out which sites you have been looking at.

Now at home this might be okay but if you are using a an office or public computer, you don’t want to leave a record of where you’ve been… for the next person to find!

So here’s how you clear the `History’   (and those clogging up temporary files).

1. Click on the chrome’s top-right corner (3 stripes ..  `setting’) button..

2. As before, a dialogue box (with menu options) will open up on the right hand side..   This time..  select the `History’ option…as shown below.

3. Another box will open up.. Like this.. and it will also have a long list of sites you have visited up to this moment..  (the list is not shown in this graphics…’cos it’s my private list..and I already wiped it before taking this screen shot :-p)

4. Now click on the `Clear all browsing data’    button.. The following box with new options will come up on the screen!

Here you can choose different items..   But as you can see, I am a big fan of wiping out everything (history and temp files, pass words, auto fill data etc..)   I also select the  `the begining of time’  option (ie everything upto current moment).   You can alternatively just select `past hour’   or `past day’ or `past week..’ or `past 4 weeks’   .   If you choose that, remember that everything `before’ that specified duration will still be in your computer.

Warning:

If you also select `clear saved passwords’,  it will erase all passwords you have saved…(like when you log into facebook, and just close the screen..so next time when you go ..it lets you in straight away).    That means, next time, you need to enter passwords again..

Recently, a friend followed my advise and erased all history & passwords. But he had not saved his passwords elsewhere…or could not remember his own e-mail password. I had to help him re-set all that.    Don’t make the same mistake!

Gaian Times Magazine – 2nd anniversary – issue 8 – Contribute!

Gaia is an Earth Goddess, and in this modern age of eco and environmental concerns, we thought our magazine should be named after Gaia. So Gaian Times was born.. It was registered in February 20111 as a not-for-profit company in England & Wales (yes, with the Government, and GT is bound by legal Objectives.

The first FREE online magazine was published on 21st June 2011.  So this June, we are marking GT’s 2nd anniversary!    The next issue (#8 is due in July’13) will celebrate the 2nd anniversary.

The e-magazine is actually just  one of the `products’ of Gaian Times! And it is also time for Gaian Times to step up it’s delivery of objectives.  We’ve had 2 years to establish a presence…and now we’ll start doing more!  (more of that another time!)

** Art works & Photos – of an eco-spiritual nature.   (Send these by e-mail as jpeg / gif/png format please and ensure file size is no bigger than 200 MB   (most internet e-mail providers will block larger file transmission anyway..and it will clog up your e-mail first).

** Poetry – fitting in with GT themes !

** Start a Column- we already have many regular columns..  astrology, esoterica, psychology & Counselling.. (staring a few news ones in #8)  If you can provide regular write-ups, why not propose a new column of your own.. at Gaian Times Magazine?  (we can also put it in our facebook page).

What’s up in the stars for June 2013?  Am talking about astronomy now, and what you can see (mostly with naked eye, and some with small telescopes).

Summary of video

1. Mercury, Veus & Jupiter

Can be seen just after sunset, in the West-North-West sky (in the constellation of Gemini)

2. Meteor Shower

On 11th June. High in SouthEast sky around 4.30am.  You can see the rare `Gamma Delphinids’ meteo shower  (close to Aquila and Capricornids..is a small constellation called Delphinus).

3. Four major Asteroids

Ceres, Pallas, Vesta & Juno are the first 4 asteroids to have been discovered. All are visible this month. Ceres & Pallas near Gemini, Juno near Aquarius.

4. Asteroid 1998 QE2

This one passed by Earth not so long ago – on 31st May 2013! A medium-large telescope is needed now to see it. Look south after 9pm..in the Constellations of Libra & Ophiucus.

5. Milky Way

By the end of June, Moon is rising very late, by midnight, so that gives plenty of evening / early night  time to look at the night sky..and without the bright light of gthe moon, parts of our galaxy Milk Way can be seen..  (as a fine dust of stars in bands that are obvious to miss. I saw this some years ago and was amazed!)

Rutting stags

In early Autumn (September and October) they begin their rutting – where male deer (Stags) begin their courting behaviour – first eating a lot in the weeks leading to this period, putting on a lot of body mass, and then herding and rounding up a large number of female deer to mate with (his Harem).  During this time, the Stags do become highly agitated and can charge at people or animals (dogs) if they go anywhere near the herd. It’s a pure and simple territorial act!

Those other stags that do not have a harem of female deer do try to sneak into already rounded up female groups – when the Stag of that group is distracted or drifts out a few yards. But then the leading Stag will charge and antlers get locked.. and often the intruding stag(s) are chased out. During the rutting season, the leading Stags make a lot of growling sounds. They do not eat much, and expend their energy in mating and defending his herd.  (and by the end of the rutting season, his body mass goes down!)

Culling

In Richmond, towards the end of Autumn, planned and managed culling (killing) occurs – where Rangers and trained gunners select a percentage of deer to kill.. so that the park can continue to sustain the deer population. During the culling weeks, the park is closed early (culling takes place after hours!) People are not advised to be in the park lest they get shot by mistake!

How to get to Richmond Park

• Richmond Park is in the South West part of London. There’s a main Railway station (Richmond) that has both british rail (from Clapham Junction take the trains towards Reading..)  and also the underground tube trains (District line going from London Victoria station)).
• Once at Richmond station, come out, and within few steps, you’ll find bus stop (same side as station).
• Take the Route Bus 371 from Stop: E  towards Kingston. (buses every 8-10 mins)
• Travel  in bus for about 15 mins. Get out at `American University’ stop.
• Walk forward on the same side for 3-5 minutes, and turn left at main junction (Land mark: Star & Garter nursing home)…and you’ll arrive at `Richmond Gate’ of the park. (The park has many `gates’ )

Here are the transits of planets in June 2013 (relative angles they make between them), which signs are mainly affected (by the rulership of the planets), and what dates to watch out for! I’ll present this in as simpler form as possible.. ie  beneficial, highly beneficial, difficult, very challenging / difficult etc.

Remember - that the energies of transits take a few days (or weeks in some cases) to build up, and that the time when astrological potentials exist for harmonious changes. Often the 1-2 days just before a tough aspect are when stresses and strains also show up in our lives. So do read what’s below, and aim to be either careful a few days (before a tough transit) or plan to male use of the beneficial potentials as you go towards a particular day!

June 2013 forecasts (major positive and difficult transits only)

2nd – Sun sextile Uranus.   Good for Leos & Aquarians.

Mars square Neptune- A stressful transit affecting Aries and Pisces – prone to feeling lost or getting caught up in distractions / escapism, bouts of anger and frustration; mars may act as a spark for a volatile situation with Neptune providing the fuel.

Neptune Stationary (going retrograde) – Coupled with the above aspect, this one will affect all, but more so for Pisceans..  (see part 1 of the forecast)

8th - Mercury square Uranus – stressful for Geminis, Virgos and Aquarians – watch out for the mind playing tricks, small things lodged in that keep chipping away or sudden bouts of depression.

11th-

Venus opposition pluto –  a challenging time for Libras, Taureans and Scorpions  where forces are pulling at in opposite directions, and resolution can only be reached with balance or compromise;

Saturn trine Neptune- Highly beneficial exists  for Capricorns & Pisces. Some of that cloud of doubts may vanish, replaced by inspired plans and thoughts for long term.

12th – Venus square Uranus – stressful for Librans, Taureans and Aquarians.

17th- Mars sextile Uranus – fairly good for Aries and Aquarians. Expect the unexpected..in a good way”!

19th- Sun conjuncts Jupiter- Very good for Leos, Sagittarians, and nearly everyone – as the Sun (our Star) and the biggest and most beneficial planet Jupiter are joining their energies! Everyone should- no matter what other matters are pressing- look positively about their higher learning and  expanding horizons. As this is happening in Gemini, it’s a case of manage your mind and thoughts – (you think therefore it becomes!)

21st – Mercury conjuncts Venus- another very good day – mainly for Gemini, Virgos, Taureans and Librans.

26th – Sun trine Saturn; Sun trine Neptune; Mercury retrograde starts; – A mixed day of 2 very good transits but overshadowed by the retrograde of Mercury starting.  Leos, Capricorns & Pisceans will stand to benefit the most.. But all can tap into these energies – as the Sun is involved. Long term goals, inspired ideas, laying foundations are well starred.. but as Mercury begins retrograde, the next few weeks may bring lost opportunities (despite initial irritations and aparent problems).  see part 1

28th – Venus semi-sextile Jupiter- Fairly good day for Librans, Taureans and Sagittarians..  But as these are the 2 most beneficial planets, forming a beneficial aspect – everyone stands to gain..!

Note about Cancerians-

These forecasts are written with all the planets except the Moon in mind. Moon rules the sign of Cancer, so by looking at transits of Moon we can work out what sort of (good/ bad) day Cancerians may be having.. However, the moon moves so fast (by our solar system planetary standards) that it forms aspects with other planets almost every day- if not every few hours!  (just tells you why Cancerians probably have such a shifting energy with sentiments & moods!).  Look at part 1 to see how Cancerians are affected by transits.
