Consorting with Gaia, playing with Light!

Dear all,  it’s been a month since I started to `camp out’ and sleep in the garden.. (yes, through rain, shine and the cold nights now!)

It’s a quest started to declutter my spirit, reconnect with Earth, protect the garden from interfering Neighbours (long story), and to look for the light within..

It’s not a Hermit-quest..because by day I am doing everything as `normal’ as I do…on the internet, attending events, running rituals…etc.   But at night, I retreat to the garden and my tent.. in the sacred space by the tree where I have been doing magical works & meditations for at least 20+ years..

Mani stars

There’s been so many insights, empowering thoughts and ideas flowing through..  Am not trying to capture them all..  Just will see which ones `stay’ in my conscious mind..

Sometimes, at night…I just play with stars and light…here’s one of those nights.. where I set the digital camera on long exposure and play about with a lantern.

Bright Blessings-Mani

Doctor Who – Art of Mani

If all goes well, a portal will open up at 7.50pm (gmt) and swallow the entire..  No..just kidding. Am going to try something a bit clever..   set up a blog and let it be published at a pre-set time..(cos I;ll be in a Cinema watching the big show tonight!!)   So.. this blog should be coming out…at 7.50pm…gmt..when the `Doctor Who: Day of the Doctor’ premiers all over the world..in many countries…in many cinemas..as well as on their television screens (of course!)

Most of this art works are very old..and faded.. I suppose I could enhance it graphically…Maybe another time..But here are the scans of the original..

These were copied covers off those Target Novelisations..  going back to mid-1980’s when I had arrived in UK..

And here are some slightly better quality pencil art.. portraits of the older Doctors..

And Finally, here’s a concept illustration (A3) called `The Forfeit’  that shows the 6th Doctor with Valyard..   Notice the Hanged-Man tarot card, the fallen chess piece, the 13 on dice and so on..  🙂

Enjoy

Astrology Charts & graphics for Solar & Lunar Eclipses of April & May 2013

It’s a Triple Eclipse period!  Normally Eclipses occur in pairs..  one Solar and one lunar…but once in a while, there may be a third one.. (it’s to do with the orbits, geometry and the lunar nodes.. )

Well, we have a Full Moon (lunar) partial eclipse on 25th April 2013, then a Solar eclipse on 10th May 2013, and another Full Moon (penumbral lunar) Eclipse on 25th May’13.

I’ve created Astrology charts for all 3 of them, so you can see where the planets will be on those specific days..

I’ll be writing more on how and who are affected by these Eclipses, and if you do know your own birth chart / planetary positions, – how you can work out if any parts of your life will be severely affected!!

For now, here are the charts..   Come back and check in a few days..  or subscribe to my blog to keep up to date 🙂

Sanctuary of the Goddess (Visionary art & ideals)

Sanctuary of the Goddess…  What and where is the Sanctuary of the Goddess?  It’s global and yet within us. A true belief..and an ideal.. for each and every pagan, magician, spiritualist.. seeking the comfort, solace, beauty and nurturing arms of the Great Mother Goddess…who is known by many names..Gaia, Isis, Aphrodite, Artemis, Shakthi, Freya, Tara.. and more..

I was inspired to spontaneously create this open facebook group a month ago..   I guess I am just following an idea, an ideal..? a thought..or even a feeling .That’s all I know…  The name has come to be, so now…where it may go is up to all those who join and contribute..

Arc of Isis - Sanctuary of the Goddess
Arc of Isis – Sanctuary of the Goddess

The art work for it began with the `Arc of Isis../ Dark Isis ‘ (link is here if you want to see that).  . But now I’ve had some more inspiration to do more art.. and what I have used are photos I had personally taken..of places in London, Croydon (Coombe woods), Hasting, Avebury, Scotland, and of course the cave from Cornwall. .

Feel free to praise, promote and honor the Goddess in any of her forms.. Art, creative expressions, poetry are welcome.. as are open honest deep explorations and discussions. Conflicts are okay as long as those involved are brave enough to stay and go deep.. rather than mud-sling and run. Provocations and antagonism are discouraged..if it is aimed at people. Harmony is much valued.

Imagine your place of tranquility.. Express your creativity.. and share your beauty within.

And here is the second art work..  which is a variation on the theme..  Enjoy.. and let your mind wander to these peaceful realms..  It’s out there in the astral already..

ps. Am happy for these art works to be shared…(but it will be nice if I am credited for it).  🙂

The Dragon-Calling, Hern & Deer-Goddess (3 art works)

`The Calling’ was initially done as a painting/crayon work on A4 paper. But few years later, I took a photo of it, and whilst keeping the dragon intact and enhancing it, I added photos of April, backgrounds (countryside from Cornwall, cliffs from Hastings) by building up layers (infact the original photo of the `girl’ is a nude one, and the cloths were built up using other photos of fabric!!)

The Hern graphics (left)  is quite old.. almost 6 years, and was initially created for the ritual group `Hern’s Tribe’ (something I started).  You can see how the original photo of me (beardless, short cropped hair) was digitally pained and enhanced. The interlaced background of Trees came from a photo of trees i had taken in Wimbledon!   Few years ago,the same art was used in A Pagan Federation magazine `Pagan Dawn’.

The eco-art `Deer Goddess’ (right) is one that  my partner April and I created in Richmond park some 3-4 years ago, using twigs and pieces we found nearby. Once finished, we did some meditative work with the creation, and left it for the natural elements (and real Deers) to scatter it again.  We can just imagine if a passer-by had seen it (it wa slightly hidden) and got a surprise!

An Artist’s Tale

Here’s me, writing these blogs week after week – since December’11,  putting my thoughts of Science, Technology, and recently more Psychology and Pagan spirituality. It occurs to me that I’ve left out (till now) an important part of me from the bigger picture.  I am an Artist – and have been one, all my life – long before I could talk in english, long before I believed in deities, and long before I learnt the Sciences! In fact I used to define my identity as `An Artist’! (which no doubt will shock so any who have come to know me in the recent 20 years!)

From a childhood age, I have drawn and painted (water colours) and art comes rather naturally for me – then and now – though nowadays I don’t seem to do much of it with pencils, papers & paint brushes. These days it’s mostly photographs and Graphics softwares.  Unless of course  it’s a bnaer or a ritual backdrop, or a mask or some prop!  But in my heart of hearts, that really doesn’t count or satisfy me!  Gone are the mountain ranges and sun rises, sea sides and sun-sets, farms, cows, elephants, peacocks and monkeys, old railway tracks and coal burning trains – and even some festivities of the local temples!  Those were the pre-14 years of my art world.  Now it’s fantasy creatures, gods and goddesses, aliens, dragons, Earth-rise on alien worlds, and Suns in artificial spaceships…

What I long for is to draw with pencils, on paper and paint with brushes and colours – get it messy and wait for those terrifying mistakes which first ruin but then vastly change and make the whole work better than planned. Yes Serendipity!

For all most 2 years I have had a dedicated website  (Art of Mani) set up for my various `new’ art works..   That’s works I had created since 1985 – from the point of my arrival in England – first english comic books I created, covers for teen fictions, fantasy & visionary arts, masks, props, sculptures made of paper and even my own hair!

“Some pieces of work take literally years from start to finish- not because they are very large, but because the creative act is a force that has its own cycle, and we can never really predict it”  I say in the Profile section of my Art website.

“When inspiration hits, I do quick drawings, doodles or sketches on note books- sometimes any piece of paper I can find! At some point I then sit down to draw them out / flesh them out in detail. (after  many cups of coffees, television programs that just happen to be most interesting as they have never been before!). Once this is done (the agonising process of primal fire that just will not stop till it’s energy has been spent!), I put the work away- and this is where the `years’ might come in!  And one day when the mood and circumstances take me, I take it out of some long forgotten folder and (after more cups of coffee) start painting! Of course once the painting starts, I become utterly involved, irritated by interruptions of having to eat, drink and sleep..  till the work is done. Occasionally mistakes happen, water spills, (worse- coffee spills!)  (even worse, I accidentally rinse my paint brushes in the coffee cup!) But the joy has always been in correcting the mistakes and finding that the finished painting turned out far better than planned! Serendipity?!! “

This is all very well, talking about what I wrote in my Art website, but why have I not given any serious attention …to that website or even my art works? .

I don’t know why..

Actually I do.  It’s my writing..  it takes, uses and drains almost all of my creative times, and so the Artist in me never has enough energy to stand, stare and pick up a pencil and paper..and be lost in those imaginary worlds within made manifest on paper.

I keep telling myself – that when I have written all the things I have to write out of my system (!), I’ll stop, and get to my art..and give the rest of my life to art!

But what if those days never come?

I realise suddenly, the Artist and writer in me must co-exist, just as the Scientist & Magician in me exist together – switching from one to another. After all, there’s plenty of space in my mind, for such sub-personalities 🙂

Trees as People

Recently on facebook, one person made a post, where Trees were refered to as `People’.    That got me thinking, and I made a reply, and I thought it important that I posted that reply as a `status update’ in my own profile:

“Nearly all the pagans work with trees in a magical way, and I must say trees have helped me in more ways than one. And when trees I love and am connected to have been cut down or hacked by people unexpectedly, I have had serious physical injuries to my own self within days! One thing I must say , however is that I think we humanise too many things around us. Trees range from dwarves to such giant magnificent entities.. but to me, they are not people! For people are flawed humans.. and trees, they are perfect creatures of nature.”

To this, some of my friends (F1, F2, F3..) responded  as follows.

F1:   “It rather depends what you mean by people… But I agree about the perfection of tree beings.

F2:  Perhaps referring to trees as Standing People points to an aspiration that one would hope would be a part of homo sapiens type people….. But it is interesting to reflect on the perfection of trees. The Yew, the sycamore and, no doubt other trees excrete a toxic substance that kills off anything that might attempt to grow in its shade. The Ash populates an area with such speed and in such great quantities that it is sometimes considered a weed in its denial of other species the space to develop a diverse range of flora. I can think of parallels in human society which we would criticise for such an approach. Food for thought, perhaps. 🙂   Nature, red in tooth and claw, green in leaf.

F3: I agree. We are all part of the same web and we are as perfect or as flawed as we allow ourselves to be. Of course humans are flawed but that is part of our journey. A tree that has grown in the wrong place, without enough light or food, could be said to be flawed too. We are all striving to grow and to be the best that we can be. The difference for me is one of speed…flowers are here and gone in the blink of an eye, we last a little bit longer, trees longer still and rocks the longest of all. We all have our place, our perfections and our flaws. I prefer not to reflect on the ‘perfection’ of something else by thinking about how imperfect humans are. We are young and trees are old. We are learning.

So I got thinking further, my mind provoked by these responses.  And here were my replies.
“To define `flawed’ I look to our way of thinking of machines or systems. Something that does not fully and efficiently serve its purpose for coming into existence ..is flawed. A faulty machine is either repaired or scraped. A weakling bird with health problems from birth, very quickly dies – by starvation, or by being thrown out of nest – by its own siblings sometimes! It is `flawed’ because somewhere n its genetic make-up, its programming became flawed ..resulting in a `weak’ fledgling. Come to think of it, am now thinking about humans …what’s the purpose of our programming? if we are serving it, we are fine.. if not, we are flawed? Hmm.. Quite frankly, survival drives me.. not poetry. Though am likely to use esoterica and poetry and anything else to ensure my survival, if need be. Harsh I know..but its part of human-nature, right? :-)”

“I guess we should define things – I’d call humans `people’ – the creature that has evolved out of apes. Esoterically and poetically we humans `humanise’ so many non-human living things and even non-living things (what would you say is the definition of `life’ by the way?) I agree that nature is harsh, hard, and utterly selfish and every creature fights for its own survival most of the time (exceptions are when one puts its offspring’s well-being first). Trees no exception (except trees don’t put their offspring’s needs above their own. An oak doe not keel over and ie just because its seed grows near it). No other living thing is flawed, but humans.. because we humans think humans are end all and be all.. and so we try to humanise everything. 🙂 (Of course we also have to define what we mean by flawed, for this to be a fully sensible pondering.. :-)”

So readers and pagans? what thoughts do you have?

I’ll leave you with this art work that I did a very long time ago..   as it seems rather relevant 🙂
