Nearly all who practise Wicca & modern Witchcraft will have heard of the Wiccan Rede (An it harm none, Do as you Will’). But am sure not all know that there is a `longer poem’ related to it. The longer version first made its appearance in 1974, when it was published in a magazine `Earth Religion News’. Although people have claimed the longer version originates before 1950’s (before Gerald Gardner `created’ Wicca), some believe that the longer poem was created *after* Doreen Valiente spoke of the short Rede in 1964 in a public lecture. So in fact, original source is still disputed. There is a good article charting this in wikipedia (see links below)
`An it harm none Do what you Will’ is – many would agree, an `impossible’ one to follow 100%. Whatever we do will cause some sort of harm or distress to someone or thing elsewhere.. emotionally or psychologically, if not physically. (simple examples are when we attend a job interview and get the job, so the other candidates don’t get it…Another example is a nice happy country walk.. where just the walking alone probably kills insects and worms underfoot and new seedling plants!). The Wiccan Rede can only ever be an aspiration..and in particular, in the practice of personal magical workings and spell-casting.
I posted just the graphics (above) in a facebook page, and within 10 hrs it had been shared 22 times and reached 1,200+ people (and still going!). It tells me that this is a matter of great interest to many people.
One person asked the question, `at what point do you stop letting it [The Rede] harm you?’
It is an Interesting idea. Trying to be true to `it’ can cause the person harm because it ties the person’s hands from possibly doing what he/she can do to getting what he/she wants without worrying about other people. So the Rede needs to be factoring in a balance of needs and their fulfilment by many people..not just one. ..
Another comment made was, `and it harm none also applies to yourself’
My response to this is, in everyday world, people -while serving themselves- do (Will) countless `ordinary’ things that in some way cause harm/ stress/ distress to many other people or living things (animals, trees, environment)… That’s is them just going about their lives…without even being spiritual, religious or magical in any conscious way.. So this Rede is ..as said before.. an `impossible guideline’ to follow to the letter!. It can only be an aspiration.. and has to be balanced with everything else one does.. be it self-serving or selfless serving of others.
I shall add more to this as and when I hear of other questions/ comments and any related responses I give.
Below are 2 resources – A full version of Wiccan Rede poem, and a video by Stephen Cole (friend of mine) reciting the full poem in a video for his `One Man Theatre Company’
The Wiccan Rede (Full Version)
Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust.
Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.
For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out.
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme.
Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much.
Honor the Old Ones in deed and name,
let love and light be our guides again.
Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune.
Widdershins go when the moon doth wane,
and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane.
When the Lady’s moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two.
When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart’s desire seek.
Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail.
When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast.
When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth.
When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest.
Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.
Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows.
Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God’s
insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magic to flower.
Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland.
Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.
Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning.
White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility.
Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine.
Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen.
Elder is the Lady’s tree burn it not or cursed you’ll be.
Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark.
As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it’s now Samhain.
When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows.
When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn.
As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magic rite.
Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all.
When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules.
In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way.
When the Sun has reached it’s height time for Oak and Holly to fight.
Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall.
Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you’ll be.
Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you’ll know.
When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed.
With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend.
Merry Meet and Merry Part bright the cheeks and warm the heart.
Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good.
When misfortune is enow wear the star upon your brow.
Be true in love this you must do unless your love is false to you.
These Eight words the Rede fulfill: An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will.

My Blogs on Wicca:
Who on Earth was Doreen Valiente? I know what most Witches & Wiccans are thinking..`Are you serious? Doreen Valiente IS the mother of modern Wicca (Witchcraft). Call your self a Wiccan High Priest. You must know this..” Well, actually, I do now.. But I didn’t have a clue…when I actually did meet her.. way back in 1997 or 1998 (must check my old records!)
It had been a few years after I had been initiated into a Coven (yes, one of the covens with a lineage that goes back to Gerald Gardner!).. and our Coven members went on a day trip.. to Brighton..for a Workshop.. where Doreen Valiente was present – rather fragile!
I remember getting there early.. and as far as I was concerned, it was a nice day out with my fellow coven members… and so I had said yes to attending the workshop. Buy I had no idea about the facilitators. It didn’t matter much.
It seems to matter a hell of a lot to thousands of people nowadays… lineage name-dropping, who they know, who initiated them, who they initiated, and all the similar stuff (let’s leave the who slept with, and who broke which coven ..when..out …for now. I’ll save that for `my’ autobiography..shall I ? )
I got all my spirituality, loyalty, kinship, brotherhood & sisterhood, nurturing High Priestess, kind and friendly High Priest..and a close bunch of Witches to be with…all in coven life. So the past, or the future didn’t matter. In fact, I actually didn’t know how lucky I had been, about my lineage, about my elders and all that.. I didn’t know any of it.. much..for the first 4 years of Coven / wiccan life. Somehow it mattered less..
It was long after my 2nd Degree, and the closing of our original coven.. (amicably!) ..when I started to guest at other covens.. that I started to get exposure of the politics, powerplay, history and all that . That was when the innocence truly broke.. and I fell from Garden of Eden (pardon me for using a Christian concept here. perhaps I should say `from Garden of Gaia?)
So the day I met Doreen Valiente, all those years ago, I didn’t know how `important’ she was. I was happy being with my craft brothers & sisters..and during lunch break, couldn’t wait to get to the sea-front and play with the waters…and made the most magical find to this date! (Apart from the gold ring with diamonds on it that I had found in Hastings a few years ago…that is..or the actual first kiss with my partner some 7-8 years ago).
So few years ago, while pondering about Doreen’s books, April (my wife) and I decided to explore some places for real.. and we made our way to the Chanctonbury Ring..
That’s for another blog.. 🙂
Bright Blessing ..on this day of Midsummer…
ps. Note of Art: The Doreen graphics used her was graphically `painted’ by me, using Photoimpact 11 software . I used soft brushes to block out shapes, then charcoal brushes..to do texture / skin.. and then use smudge ..and finally a small brush to put lines..and then used the `burn’ tool to darken areas…(and finish with more smudging & blurring). I’ve used this technique style before of course ..to create graphics of Prince Charles, Margaret Thatcher and Lady Diana in the past. Expect more such art of other people 😉
pps. Coming soon: A video of our trip to Chanctonbury Rings, famous for the Doreen Valiente’s `Chanctonbury Charge’ (found in all Book of Shadows) .
Inspired by the recent NASA photo of Spiral Galaxy M106, and working on some upcoming Goddess Isis related rituals for this year (2013: Year of the Witch), I created this photo-graphics. The words are a small section taken from the Goddess Charge, written by Doreen Valiente – Mother of modern Witchcraft & Wicca (she used parts of the words from Aradia: Gospel of the Witches). [more on that another time!]
Star Goddess & the Universe
“..Listen to the words of the Star Goddess, She in the dust of whose feet are the hosts of Heaven, whose body encircleth the Universe,” goes one of the lines in the Charge of the Goddess. As an astrolger and a magician / Wiccan, I am particularly fond of those lines. I take it to mean that the body of the Star Goddess is so vast that in covers and encompasses the whole Universe, and that even the mere dust from the feet of the Star Goddess are the `Hosts of Heaven’ (ie other deities, angels etc).
My knowledge of Science & Astronomy tells me that Stars and Planet and galaxies are made of vast amounts of interstellar dust and gas that have coalesced by the pull of gravitational forces to form those objects, and those gas and dust clouds of primordial universe were made of sub-atomic particles …electrons, protons, neutrons and yet smaller `objects’ such as quarks, gluons and photos.
Here on Earth, often religious prose talks of powers of god, goddess, nature, and elements – air, fire, water, earth. But these are not the fundementals of nature – atoms, subatomic particles and forces such as electromagnetism, gravity, strong and weak nuclear forces..
What is interesting now in modern times are the many theories and scientific explorations of yet more hidden entities of nature – such as Dark matter & dark energy..which are seemingly undetectable at the moment by direct means, but have been scientifically attributed to be making up the `missing mass’ of the Universe, and the hidden forces / energies responsible for the way galaxies behave – pushing each other apart (the expanding universe).
These all start to come back to the hidden nature, energy and forces that are `out there’ – not just the known forces and faces of deities but the veiled, powerful and unknown. Of course in different religions, their respective followers worship their own versions of these hidden forces and deities. In ancient Egypt (and now modern pagan traditions), the `Dark Isis’ seems to be a popular form of deity who stands for such hidden power. Dark in this sense (in my view) does not mean dangerous, evil etc but simply hidden. Returning to the idea of what existed `before the big bang’ that created the known Universe and its contents, we can start to get a feel of the reality or non-reality – the non-existing creative force that brought forth the Universe. Science has no answers there, so it is fine for a scientist (and a magician) like me and others to speculate, ponder and muse.
Creating this art was quite easy. I used an Isis statue my sister had brought from her Egypt trip as a gift for me (one I re-painted few years ago). I had the statue in front of my lap top with a backdrop of the Eclipsed Sun graphics I had previously created for my Eclipse-Magic eBook (and that was created using photos of bonfire flames and a photo of the full moon I had taken). The photo of Galaxy M106 was then overlaid and parts removed and merged. 🙂
I will say more about these concepts in future posts.. There’s quiet a bit of such thoughts in my book `Eclipse Magic Workbook’ . And more of it will be explored in the forthcoming book `Quantum Magic for Pagans’ . They both tackle the questions of looking deeper into what we call magic, religion, power and ultimately forces of nature and Deity!
By the way, in future posts, I will also be looking at some of the `fears’ people have about the `Dark Isis’. If you have thoughts to share, please leave a comment below 🙂
well, I seem to have finally started the topic that this blog was created for .. the realm where Science and Magic /Religion entangle. 🙂
