Eco-Guardians vs Warriors of the Rainbow? Some evolutionary thoughts

Few days ago, a friend wrote the following in her facebook profile:

“There will come a time when the Earth grows sick, and when it does, a tribe will gather from all the cultures of the World, who believe in deeds and not words. They will work to heal it…they will be known as the Warriors of the Rainbow.      Mission.. Mother Earth..”

My thoughts were spurred on by this, and here was my response:

It’s not so much that the Earth grows sick.. but people are pissing in their own tents!!  What the Earth needs is a bunch of intergalactic bulldozer-space ships to come down and flatten all the fowled up `human tents’ (people and their `products’) and push the whole damn lot over the cliff edge (that would be jettison the whole trace of humanity into the nearest nuclear furnace ..like the Sun). Then the skin of the Earth can heal itself.. !! We humans ..even the wonderful eco-warriors – have gotten that inner-arrogance, where we think we are going to be the grand-saviors of the Earth…  Earth doesn’t need us..and it can exist in many different extreme states…and it will make no difference to it.. But it’s us people who need the ground …soil..water and warmth.. from the Earth!

I was writing it in a sort of tongue in cheek fashion, but trying to express my frustration and despair  at a) how one strand of humanity fowls up the Earth & environment..   and b) another strand thinks it is the savior!   (In all honesty, I would chalk myself closer to the second category!)

I would add the following remarks (seeing I get more space to do so in the blog than in a facebook reply

  • Already a whole bunch of people exist (the tribe) who believe in deed -and- words  ..and they do work to improve matters    [they do things, as well as write about such things to promote/ educate/ increase awareness]..
  • Healing a wound – is not all that simple a concept (or clear cut, rather).  If  a living creature suffers a physical harm or damage, the body will try to repair itself ..But bacteria and other microbes get in and start to make the would worse..  Those microbes are just trying to get on with  their own living!   So with Earth!   If humans have caused  the previous `norm’ to be thrown off balance.. ir more carbon, dirty chemically polluted seas etc..   then some other life forms (other than humans) will take advantage of the `new environment’..  As far as Earth as a whole is concerned, it’s just reached a new balance.. !  Some life forms die, others thrive!   In such scenario, `Healing’ is not required.
  • In some ways, we humans are a natural product of the Earth and evolution. And if we are polluting the planet…then sadly that’s also a result of the evolution (in a round about way).  What’s to say where evolution will go?  Perhaps out of those chemically polluted seas and grounds will emerge a new resilient species or two or hundred?!
  • Finally, I hate to call anything that has a peaceful or altruistic purpose by linking it to war…and warriors! Warriors of the Rainbow  just implies a bunch of multicoloured body-painted warriors going to war!   Let’s call  them something else shall we?    I prefer the name `Earth or Eco-Guardians’   (you can start analysing the word `Guardian’) 🙂

So.. what do you think?

Earth Healing Ritual, Activities & Affirmations (Earth Day 2013 feature)

Earth Day 2013 - Ideas and activities you can do.
Earth Day 2013 – Ideas and activities you can do.

Earth Day is on 22nd April.. every year. It is declared by the United Nations, and celebrated by everyone on our planet – everyone who is aware of it, that is. Many Eco-groups and Organisations focus several of their ecology & environment related campaigns, and so do magical and spiritual people who consider the Earth to be a living entity (Gaia). Here is some background and lots of eco-spiritual activities you can do.

Gaian Collective explained

The Earth is our home in space. Thousands believe it is a living entity, built up of not just the physical bodies of millions of humans, animals, plans and other inanimate objects (rocks, rivers, mountains). It is believed that all the minds of the living creatures on planet Earth are connected, and give rise to `Gaia’ the living Collective consciousness-being who is self-regulating. It is akin to our bodies, where each cell is living and has a function, but collectively gives rise to a single human or animal being. We each one of us think each one of us is a `I’ or `me’ – but within us are billions of living cells.. (and all the symbiotic and parasitic creatures that live inside our bodies).

So, by each of us becoming consciously aware that we are part of a larger collective, and tying to reconnect to that Collective, we are in fact strengthening that Gaia Collective – spiritually an magically. And if Gaia is strong and well, that can only benefit the whole world..

What can you do on Earth day? Some simple ideas and suggestions:

Go for a walk in the wild, a park or woods to be reconnected to Earth – on a conscious, physical or magical level. You don’t need to make it grand or specific – just go for a nice long walk, without any usual distractions such as internet, ipods, phone calls, personal every day problems ( we all have them!)  Yes, they are products of human intellect and genius, and so in a round about way, `natural’ – but purpose of this exercise is to de-clutter our conscious mind and reach a sort of meditative state.

Hold a celebration or picnic – with family or friends. Gather other like-minded eco-aware people and mark the day. We all celebrate or mark (or remember) our birthdays in some way of form.. This is Gaia’s special day (not exactly birthday but closest special day). So celebrate it as such.  Yes, why not have a cake and cut it in honour of Gaia / Earth?

Earth `Heart beat’ Meditation – group or personal:   A more spiritual approach is to actually do an Earth meditation (on your own, or as part of a group).  It does not have to be a big complicated activity. Just 5 minutes will do (but 20-30 minutes is ideal). All you do is sit in a pleasant natural place if possible (woodlands, by a garden tree, by a small pond, river, stream, cave etc). Sit by a natural place, be comfortable, close your eyes – and let go of every day thoughts. Then try to visualise the Earth in space.. a planet, full of billions of life forms within it.  Think of each one of those creatures having a heart, and heart beat. Try to `hear’ that heart beat. Different animals have different rates of heart beats – but for this meditative purpose, it is okay to visualise all the heat-beats being slowly becoming synchronised..  and the Earth beating as one heart!

Healing work:  One magical activity that some may consider doing is Earth Healing. For this, it is perhaps good to be in  very calm and peaceful state of mind. Keep a rose quartz or other green crystals with you (in your hands or pockets). Then think of love and peace, an send that energy to the Earth.. into the ground. You can also visualise green light coming from your heart – pure and sincere of well-intentions- and pour that unconditionally to the Earth.  One meditative way is to visualise the Earth in space..  and pour your light and bath the whole of the Earth with it..!

Eco-activities: Think of real tangible ways you may b able to help protect, preserve and nurture the ecologies and environment of the World.   Some suggestions are – raising awareness by writing  & blogging (as I am doing), getting your fiends together and doing some litter-picking and tidying p a natural spot (like a local river side or woodland), creating a group or charity and doing eco-work, raising money / funds and donating it to other eco-organisations that do good genuine work.

Affirmations- Oaths, vows and personal Declarations: This one is for those who feel very spiritually inclined. Get to a natural place – and do some meditative work, as suggested, or a ceremony. Then lay your hands on a living Tree or the ground itself, and make your promises, affirmations or eco-related vows to the Earth it self. Think of this as important as a marriage vow that people make (and try to keep), or the equivalent of formal declarations and oaths people make when they take on a position in community (like MP’s, Solicitors, Police, etc. It is akin to swearing a real loyalty and allegiance to the Earth…and should be taken as magically binding).

Sharing: After Earth day, remember to share what you have done, by writing about it, sharing any related photos, poetry and other thoughts – with people, internet social groups & forums etc. That way, the positive regard ad energy spreads…and can add to the next year’s Earth Day!

Feel free to share this post..  more people are aware and do these, the better for Gaia.

Torn Canvas: Pieces of my life

Having started to talk about the Art works,  I’d like to share some of my personal history- key events that shaped the way my life has evolved.  I’ve used some of the art work to illustrate the mood.

Racial Violence in Sri Lanka (my Country of origin)

This has played a major role in shaping not just mine, but several hundred thousand Tamil people!  It’s an age old issue of seeking more independence hat stems from 1979 to modern day, where Tamil people have been so persecuted by Sinhalese people and the government army, that Tamils have had to take up arms and fight a guerilla war! (You may have heard of the `Tamil Tigers’ ).  Our family was one that got caught up in all that, and we eventually came to the Uk in fear of our lives.  We were the lucky ones, for many thousand Tamils have been killed since 1985.

A personal attack on me -(the personal disability begins).

A day light mugging after school, at the age of 17yrs colored the way I began to see the world around me in London- something I had thought was going to be better than Sri Lanka. The attack on me broke my right shoulder, and though it healed, it has become a recurring physical problem (not to mention getting mugged again few years ago in a bus and getting my right shoulder dislocated for the 4th time!). It prevents me from doing contact sports, but has squeezed me into other paths- such as aerobics, fitness, walking, exploring the country, mind-powers (when the body fails) and so on.

Death of my father ( Scars that go deep..)

Few days after the new year of 1990 also changed my life in a big way. It is in one sense equivalent to a naive crown prince being thrust onto the throne and expected to rule the kingdom (family & cultural responsibilities of asian male!) But on the other hand, it was also very much a door of darkness opening beneath my feet and falling into a chasm of delayed psychological trauma! I believe it took a few years before the full force of his sudden death hit me- which spun me into an exploration of death, brain, mind, and transformation. It saw me become faith-less, and rise again with pagan spirituality empowering me and enlightening me with some mysteries.

Paganism & Ritual Magic
(From darkness into Light, and from weakness to power)

This is a spiritual path of empowerment that includes nature worship. No middleman is needed between me and the god  or goddess! This spirituality is nothing new to me- as it has highly similar facets to Hinduism that I was brought up with (which after all is an eastern form of paganism). However there are differences- the lack of physically built temples, the strong emphasis on lunar & solar cycles, the exploration of natural land and features all around us as a place of divine- all help very much to empower me! Not just that, even the Stars out there, and galaxies, and exploding Supernovae and black holes.. are all of the mysteries.. that I am fascinated by as a Scientist, admire as an artist, and worship and honor as a Pagan!
