Last March of the Elephantom

Elephantom Yesterday at The March for Elephants & Rhinos (London). This is the 4th annual March I have been to … (since the very first one in 2013). And it’s the 3rd one my sister Vathani Navasothy has actively been involved.. alongside `Action for Elephants Uk’ group that was set up (by Maria Mossman, Denise Dresner & friends) after the first March was so successful. My sister has consistently involved in it…promotions, publicity, sales, and every year doing the sponsored 10K run ..raising literally several thousands of pounds. I should know..I’ve video’ed it. ūüôā This year she took up the role of marshalling the March.

It has been an absolute thrill, privilege and an honour to have stood shoulder to shoulder with my fellow eco-activists (saving Elephants, Rhinos, Whales, Dolphins).. ūüôā Nothing will take away that…or the camaraderie & friendships I have formed with fellow activists.

Elephantom & Vathani at march for Elephants & Rhinos 2016 London.jpg

And.. each year, my old creation Elephantom the Eco-hero has been involved in `his’ many guises.. at these marches ūüôā ( I wrote a children’s graphic novel of that character originally created by me in 1994. It’s published in Amazon as ebook & print book).

But ..sometimes all good things must end.. and this will be the `final’ appearance for me & Elephantom at these great `March for Elephants & Rhinos’.

Why? Well.. as the war-Doctor would say, `It is the privilege of lesser men to light the flame.. and others to carry that on..’ .

Many of us have lent our passions and energies to bringing these to public awareness…turning up, doing huge amounts of blogging, videos (filming/ editing), promoting..etc.. I see now..that the Marches are huge…thousands are turning up.. Signatures are being taken and delivered into 10, Downing Street.. It’s going to be okay.. ūüôā

And so.. (me and my sister) will be peeling off… to get on with other causes that are dear to our hearts..other matters that deeply need our energies and attentions..

I often say… nothing matters more than solving the heart-wrenching (for me) tragedy of 25,000 children dying *every day*. If humans can’t even save their own future..their own off-springs…then what good is saving the world or wild life?

The earth will carry on…none of us are in any doubt.. but it just won’t be habitable for us humans..and that’s fine.. Earth has done that many times over the Aeons.. Dinosaurs have come and sadly gone.. and I just hope humans who have come don’t go like the dinos! So.. there has to be a balance of causes.. for both humans, animals and the natural world.. !

As for me.. I have `Gaian Times’ to re-focus on.. A non-profit eco-company & magazine I started legally 5 years ago.. I will carry on working physically, spiritually and eco-magically in all my pagan / witchy rituals with people…to keep putting the energy of protection & peace for all living thing. (In fact, our Hern’s Tribe were out in woods last night doing just that eco-magic for peace & empowerment last night) ūüôā

I also have my own ventures and earnings and life to worry about.. (and one of them is settling down in life..and having Children of my own.. though when finances are secure..I am more likely to adopt.. IfI can save just one of those 25,000 children dying every day in the world.. my life would have been fulfilled..

Best wishes
-Mani Navasothy

Join us in at a protest outside the Chinese embassy in London to call on China to take urgent steps to help stop the slaughter of elephants for their ivory.

We call on China to close its ivory-carving factories, to close its ivory retail outlets, and to end its domestic ivory trade. As the world’s leading consumer of ivory (over 70% of illegal ivory makes its way to China, to be carved into trinkets for affluent Chinese), China has the biggest role and responsibility in ensuring the survival of elephants in Africa.

Unless China’s leaders take these urgent steps, we will soon be witnessing the last days on earth of these majestic, supremely intelligent and emotionally sentient creatures, who are being wiped out by poachers at the rate of around 100 EVERY DAY.

If China takes the lead to save them, it will gain the respect and gratitude of people the world over. Also, it would be the single most important move to stop the trans-national criminal networks of poachers and ivory traffickers, and to halt the involvement of terrorist groups which are funded in part by ‚Äėblood ivory‚Äô.

We are pleased to have as speakers at the event Dominic Dyer from Care for the Wild International and Dr Trevor Jones from Southern Tanzania Elephant Project.

Date: Saturday 25th January 2015

Time:   12.30pm to 2.30pm

Photos & Report of the Protest

Kill the ivory trade – not the Elephants! Action for Elephants UK Protests outside Chinese Embassy!!

Can you imagine an outside being coming to hack away human bodies.. ¬†just so that they can carve out human skulls and bones as trophy for their collection…or worse.. ¬†powdered human bones for their tasty meals..or medicines? ¬†(well, this was already imagined and filmed as `The Predator’ starring Arnold Schwarzenegger)!

Luckily, we don;t have aliens who come to Earth to do this..  But we humans are quite happy to do it to other animals..  Elephants massacred for their tusks, Rhinos killed for their horns.. Tigers for their tooth,  fur and testicles..Whales & Dolphins..and more beasts ..all for our human greed and consumption!

I was feeling tired yesterday, ..and going to be a rather low-key presence at the Peaceful Protest outside Chinese Embassy, London..to band ivory trade..  Showing up and adding a body of support was more important, than not showing up because of personal circumstances..

But ¬†I kept thinking about why I am doing it.. ¬†? for me.. for the Kudos..just like some celebrities and politicians do.. ¬†to say they support some eco-campaign..? ¬† Or to really make a difference…and really save the Elephants?

Personal tiredness is one thing..and is often self-inflicted due to the kind of life styles we lead.. ¬† But life or death.. ¬†the situation those Elephants face..are not life-style choices for them..is it? ¬† ¬†They have no power or control over that one.. ¬†An external force (the madness of mankind) takes away that. …and their lives too.. ¬†Because their tooth is somehow `valuable’ ¬† – for medicinal reasons, or just purely as status symbols or art and craft.. ¬†!

So I got off my tired back-side, grabbed the Elephantom mask, and got into London.. ¬†to join fellow decent eco-warriors, campaigners,¬†protestors¬†and carers… ¬†to be outside the Chinese Embassy in London, to send out a physical message…that we do not approve.. ¬†that we want them to get their government to stop the ivory trade in their lands…so that somewhere in other lands (Africa & India) poachers won’t have a reason to kill Elephants.. to supply ivory to the Chinese people..!

My Elephantom (Eco-Hero) mask  had the desired result..  in attracting a bit of entertaining attention from passers by, as well as Media people..  (well, they want something more than slogans, banners and placards to photograph..  Entertainment sells papers!!  So shamelessly some of us exploit that to put our messages across!)

My fellow protesters made sure they stood with their slogans and placards ..right besides me or behind me.. ¬†so those will come in photos too ūüôā

Well, it was a great success..  Already initial search reveals so many big news papers in Uk have covered the event.. (links blow).

And for a first event of a new eco-(elephant) activist group, Acton for Elephants UK have done very well indeed.. Maria Mossman, who pulled us all together and started this deserves a huge hug..(never mind the pat on the back..organising this sort of thing takes a lot of guts..apprehensions, stress..and a hug will go a long way ..than a pat on the back..in soothing all that stress ! ūüôā ¬†

We’ve had incredible support from Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) with Mary Rice Executive Director¬†participating¬†and giving speeches, as did ..Dominic Dyer from `Care for the Wild’, and¬†Will Tavers from Born Free..

Watch video here of all the speeches

Needless to say, we are going to keep up the good work..and the pressure.. ¬†We’ve only just begun!!

ps. Special thanks to my sister Vathani  for carrying my bags, taking loads of photos, networking with others..while I paraded half blindingly about..   (hard to see through an Elephant Mask)!

Peaceful Protest to Ban ivory trade (25th Jan’14 London)

Action for Elephants UK will be holding a peaceful demonstration outside the Chinese Embassy in London on 25 January 2014.  This demonstration will be conducted in a peaceful and respectful way towards China.

Peaceful protest 25Jan2014 to ban ivory - Outside chinese embassy (London)
Peaceful protest 25Jan2014 to ban ivory – Outside chinese embassy (London)

China is the world’s main consumer of ivory, with demand soaring in the last decade as more and more Chinese have acquired the means to buy it. The result of this escalating demand is a huge rise in poaching elephants for their tusks, to the point where the killing has reached unprecedented levels and threatens to wipe out elephants forever.

China have the ability and power to ban the trade in ivory, causing the demand for ivory to decline, giving elephants a fighting chance to recover in their numbers.

This event will be to welcome positive steps that China have taken in recent weeks and ask them to do more. To be world leaders in banning ivory and saving elephants.

Please join us on January 25th to add your voice at this event. We will provide placards that you can download and use on the day.

The demonstration will start at 11:00am. Everyone should start gathering at the embassy at 10:45am and we will remain there until 2:30pm.

Please wrap up warm; there are toilets and facilities close by for food and drinks.

Blood-Ivory: 25,000 Elephants killed last year

Extinction is Forever
(c) Mani Navasothy

I picked up the latest `National Geographic’ Magazine, and was utterly shocked and deeply sad to read that ..last year.. 25,000 elephants were killed by poachers ¬†for the sake of their Tusks / ivory.

For example, in Cameroon’s Bouba Ndjidah National Park, poachers armed with grenades and AK-47 riffles had killed over 300 elephants this year – the largest mass elephant slaughter in decades. This is also reported by the WWF (World Wilde Fund).

In Thailand, one of the Monks who keeps elephants at his temple, was accused of starving one elephant to use its ivory for amulets (a charge he rejected).

What can we do? ¬† ¬†For my part, I did one of those `Elephant adopting’ with WWF ..last year, and get regular updates on what `my’ elephant is doing… ¬†I’ve written a children’s story book, that features the plight of the elephant (“Elephantom Origins”)..and now have resolved that ALL sales of that book, when it is published will be put towards the cause of keeping elephants as safe as possible. Not sure what else I can do? ¬†As a Hindu, I worship the god Ganesh, who is an elephant headed god.. ¬†So I have a special vested spiritual interest in the welfare of Elephants..What about you readers? ¬†Any serious thoughts?

-Mani
