Woodland Midsummer Ritual by Hern’s Tribe – 17thJune 2017 (North London)

Join us  to celebrate Midsummer  2017..  with ceremony & socials.  We’ll drum, dance and make merry …after the ceremony to honour the Sun that’s reached the height of his power.  We’ll also be marking/ celebrating our own personal achievements 🙂

 date:  Saturday  17th June 2017.

Duration: 2pm to 5pm.  (meeting from 1.30pm)

`This marks the height of the Summer, and the longest day of the year. Astrologically, it is exactly the point when the Sun enters the sign of Cancer (which is the natural house of the Moon!). The new-born Sun of the midwinter (Yule) has grown to it’s fullest potential, and so pagans are mindful at Midsummer that the wheel turns. It is when the previously defeated Holy-King returns, challenges the Oak-King and wins. Thus at Midsummer, the rein of the Oak King ends and the one of Holy King begins. Midsummer games such as tug of war enact this battle between summer and winter forces. In terms of the God myths, it is a time for the God to become Sun-King, and take his place on the throne of responsibility for his people’

Woodland Autumn Equinox 2015- Seasonal Ritual in London (Wiccan format)

Join me and my Tribal & wiccan friends in the Woods  for a Wiccan based celebration of AUTUMN Equinox.

“This is the time when the wheel turns once more, from summer to winter.  A time when the dark equals the light, and the night times begin to increase.  Trees begin to shed their leaves in preparation of the coming winter, wildlife collects seeds and stocks up for winter and animal migrations begin.  We celebrate the second harvest of the year- the harvest of the fruits.  We also mark the balance of dark and light.  In Wicca we re-enact the mythology of Hades and Persephone – her abduction, entry to the underworld, Demeter’s anguish and the withdrawal from the land, eating of pomegranate seeds by Persephone and her stay in the underworld.  We use a spiral path-working to enter the inner-world, and plant seeds of our future ventures, so that we may nurture them during the winter months. In this ritual, coven members take on the symbolic journey of Persephone.”  (taken from www.WitchcraftandMagic.uk )

Join us for a woodland Midsummer Open Ritual..in the woods near Croydon… to mark the height of the Sun in its journey through the skies. Is it all downhill from here onwards? No.. Midsummer celebrates the culmination of our personal energies.. the charging up of them..so that our inner wisdom and light can illuminate us through the coming autumn & winter months.

HT Midsummer 20June2015

In this simple yet deep magical woodland ceremony, we will create sacred space & altar in the name of Cernunnos – Lord of the Wild Beasts… weave the powers of the 4 elements (Air, Fire, Water & Earth).. work with some power (Solar) Runes to create talismans for personal use…and then join in some merriment, feasting, drumming & socials.

• All welcome..

• No previous Ritual/pagan experience needed.

Meeting arrangements:

Tram Stop: Coombe Lane. Please travel to East Croydon.. Then take the Tram to Coombe Lane.. Alight there and wait. We’ll come collect you and take you to a part of the woods where ritual will take place. (the spot may vary on the day..so please wait at the tram stop..Thanks).

DIRECTIONS

If you’re coming by tube to Chalk Farm, turn RIGHT on leaving the station & cross Adelaide Rd to get to Regents Park Rd into which you turn RIGHT (admiring the Banksy stencil graffiti of a uniformed maid sweeping dust under a wall) & go uphill to the cycle/pedestrian only bridge over a railway & turn LEFT over it.

Confronted by 3 roads take the middle one (still R P Rd) & continue past the trendy shops & coffee-houses full of minor celebrities as it curves very slightly to the left, until you reach the Queen’s Head pub on the corner opposite the gate into Primrose Hill.

Enter the Park thro’ this gate & take the steepest path in front of you to the top of the hill where you will find a viewing platform overlooking most of the old City of London to the South & East, & a Memorial to Iolo Morganwg.

To the WEST & just below the brow of the hill you will see a small copse of hawthorn trees which is where we meet. Do please come & join us & make yourself known.

After the celebration, we will go to the Richard steele pub nearby. Looking forward to seeing you there! 🙂

Wiccan Journeys & High Priestly thoughts on covens

I was giving a talk at one of the pagan moots in NW London last night (Staines Moot)..  The title was `Wiccan Journeys: There and back..and there again..!’.

It mainly outlined my (thus far) journey in the Wicca path..  how I became interested, how I became an initiated Wiccan, reaching my stage (and responsibility) as a High Priest, running training covens & groups, initiating new Seekers and so on.       The talk also covered my back and forth journeys – as I have not always felt like a `wicca’ (but always a `Witch / Magician’ !)  There are times when I have slipped out of the coven life and wiccan communities – and gone to do other magical things.. like starting `Hern’s Tribe- outdoor shamanic / eclectic group’   (the more recent one being the `woodland wicca rituals’  and the `Thames-Isis rituals) – see links at the bottom.

Talk at Ankerwycke - wiccan journeys - there and back and there again - mani navasothy 2014
Talk at Ankerwycke – wiccan journeys – there and back and there again – mani navasothy 2014

Well, this morning, I caught on to some debates that have been going on…about the good/ bad experiences, the ego and hierarcrhy of High Priests, High Priestesses, and coven leaders.

Needless to say, I have some deep thoughts on this ( I never like to hear anyone bad-mouth Wicca ..especially hard working Coven leaders..!)

Here are some of my responses:

Taking pot shots at Wiccan Hierarchy?

No one is forcing anyone into a particular tradition, path or system of beliefs.. But if one is entering a system, they should learn to be aware of its exiting form, structure, rules, guidelines.. – before criticising it, attacking it, or trying to change it. !

My HPS once told me, `walk in the footsteps f others..see what entails..before criticising what they do’ !

I appreciate that people may have had bad experiences from individuals or groups..but unless you have ever organised events, rituals, groups..and run things for long periods of time… no real wisdom is gained.

I get a little tired of people ranting on about Wiccan Hierarchy, and taking pot shots at the roles of High Priests & High Priestess. They are part of that path and system.. Learn it, understand why it’s there in the first place.. before tearing it apart. And if you are compelled to tear it apart.. I ask why? Is it because of a personal grudge, bad experience, or one;s own ego not being fed? –

The training of Coven Leaders:

Leadership of anything is always a double-edged sword.. It is there to serve the people.. but abused, it can harm the people.. To quote a line from Spiderman, `With great power comes great responsibility’

Serious covens filter interested people .. work out their commitment, dedication, loyalty etc..before even taking anyone on as trainees…and then after a year or even many years…initiate them…(into their tradition and their coven!)

It takes many years of practice ..before those initiates reach a stage of taking good personal responsibility and also that of others..and the HP / HPS stats is a `teaching position’ – it’s NOT handed down like confetti.

Even after reaching that stage.. they then undergo more months / years of `on the job mentoring’ to become `good’ HP & HPS.. Anyone who’s got this far ..then goes out and starts their own coven..trains others..initiates others.. !

This is the long hard path in an ideal world.. Old ideals and standards are dying out with those people who held it.. They have tried to pass those on.. and that wisdom survives.. just about..!

——-

So there you have it..  just some immediate responses..  But no doubt, we shall all come to this topic..again and again…and again 🙂

Thoughts of Hern… Hunter, Warrior and..Teacher?

Hern's Tribe- shamanic rituals in london

Good question from a friend is there an aspect of Hern & his legend that shows a Teacher side of him?  I thought my answer (or ponderings) below might open up a debate from others too.. so here it is…raw..  and it reveals some personal things ..perhaps for the first time openly..But it’s all in the interest of sharing experiences.. So I’ll brave it.. 🙂

“I attended a talk at Treadwells few months ago ..on the myths of Hern…and you know what the researcher said? The ONLY real fact of Hern.. is the ONE line that appears in Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor story..!! So everything else we think of as Hern myth is things that are made up by modern story tellers.. interpreting..and re-interpreting.. (Richard Carpenter did so much in Robin of Sherwood).

In many ways I was happy to hear this..because I have been doing my own interpreting and experiencing.. just an idea of a powerful god that I hung on to..embraced.. some 10 yrs ago..before starting Hern’s Tribe.. (I keep meaning to write my journey in the `Books of Hern’ …).

The work with Hern energies…empowered me..at that time when I was feeling low, rejected (got dumped by then partner..in Avebury no less after staying there a night in a B&B within the circle).. And in Hern’s Tribe, it has helped so many people find their own confidence, power, try things..then get rebellions against me..and they go off.. I still smile at that..

People have to challenge their teachers sooner or later.. it’s the child rebelling against parent.. and they go off into the big world..

I have ongoing dialogues..here and there..with Hern.. I have not kept all my promises..and life gets hard and I think I must get to it soon.. (Those `Books of Hern’, and children’s books `Adventures of Little Hern’ ).

Working energetically with Hern empowers me.. at times of low energy..I use it like a shot in the arm.. get into shamanic hern state within..so I can pull off whatever hard tasks am doing..

But the whole process is teaching me.. all sorts of things..

I do see Hern at times as a father figure (not least because my dad died 25 yrs ago.. he was an Aries…and I have projected that `father role’ onto Hern.. )

So it’s all our own interpreting.. and working with whatever is coming through our ways..our minds.. Because there are no solid myths and facts.. we are free to make it what it is for us.. and in doing so.. we are creating and extending the Myth of Hern for these modern times..”

I have a lot more to say of course..(well, I am writing a `Book of Hern’ after all)..  but the above was a `quick’ reply to my friend..  🙂

Indoor & Outdoor Imbolc Rituals coming up (in London) 2014

Imbolc (Candlemass) is one of the 8 nature based festivals that pagans celebrate – and it is said to be the time when the Winter Goddess who has kept her grip on the land loosens her hold, so that the ice melts and waters break and flow again. It is when the Goddess Bride (Brigid) `returns’ to the land. Her path is lit by candles, symbolising the return of light and warmth which is imminent. Bride is a Goddess of poetry, inspiration, healing, knot-magic and weaving. With her, she brings the gifts of 3 flames!   (Read more about Pagan Festivals)

O, to be a Man in modern times (Male Mysteries)

O, to be a Man in modern times:

So Brad Pit talks about standing by his woman (Angelina) when she lost 30 pounds and went through a low of all time.. and Dustin Hoffman emotionally explains the interesting thing about being a woman in Tootsie ..(`That was never comedy for me’..*tears*) ..

Do you think it’s time the rest of us men started to speak of our discoveries, our emotions, our hopes, sacrifices, dreams and nightmares.. and about the women who lifted us up.. and those who used us, abused us, envied us, feared us, toyed with us, loved us, hated us, and wanted to put us on planes and shoot it down?

Or shall we speak of those who could only see a threat and the large monstrous shadows the small boys within us cast? Shall we ordinary men speak of the darkness and light we have found in the hearts of the women in our lives?

Why must a man be praised only when he shows sensitivity to a woman or a child?
Why must he tuck his tooth, tail and claws, and submit or be vilified?

Why can’t a man’s voice be as strong as thunder and as sharp as a sword, as well as his touch be as gentle as feather and eyes soft and smokey as mist? Do we not worrhip Odin & Thor, Hern and Ares, as well as Pan and Sol and Osiris too? What of Chiron the mortally wounded warrior-Healer-Teacher? And Prometheus bringer of fire?

Isn’t it time.. for men to educate the world that we have more than just testosterone and beer flowing in our veins.. ?
There are moon-huts and red tents for women.. So isn’t it time for some Weyland-Huts and Sun-Circles..for men??

Males Mysteries in London - coming soon in 2014 (by Mani Navasothy / Hern's Tribe)
Males Mysteries in London – coming soon in 2014 (by Mani Navasothy / Hern’s Tribe)

Being a modern-man is not just about a pussy-kiss, a cock-rub or a bunny-tail dabbing on our faces and arses..
It is more than a spear to the Cauldron..
Deeper than a lance to the boil, more joyous than a wand to the Chalice.

It is not about the guilt of not being sensitive or strong, providing or not, or carrying the shame of men gone before and what they have done to other women..

Being a man is about the dance of light and life in all our dark places… turning war into peace, and peace into prosperity, with Sun in our hearts, moon in our brows, and Stag-horns adorning our Crowns..

It is much much more.. !
Background :

Back in 2002, in `Unicorns’ (my then-coven), a small group of men studying transpersonal psychology with the late Maureen Brown, began to meet monthly for `Male Mysteries’ discussions, prompted by Maureen. It lasted only few months. Some years later, I went on to start Hern’s Tribe, with ideas of it being a male mysteries group..but it evolved in a different way, encompassing men and women. For a long time, I have thought about these. A few years ago, Chris Crowley mentioned something about a Wiccan Male mystery meeting..that never materialised. With the guys of Hern’s Tribe, I’ve made some explorations (closed) on this subject.. exploring fire, using animals (road kills), tool making and so on (I once had to `procure’ a dead-Stag head using only a sharp edge of a branch..and later clean it all up only with craft knife to the bone..! So let’s just say Ia m no longer `squeemish’)

The NEWS: (Male Mysteries is coming to London)

So..in 2014, look our for one or two new things.. as preparations have been already underway..for few months on the exploration of `Male Mysteries (London). A facebook page & group are already set up (secret for now)..and additional pages in my Hern’s Tribe website are being developed too.. Dates for meeting are set.. and all will surface soon 🙂

Swearing oaths on the Horns – A Hern’s Tribe (London) Ritual for MidSummer

Hern's Tribe Summer gathering 2013 - Swearing on the Horns (adapted) ritual
Hern’s Tribe Summer gathering 2013 – Swearing on the Horns (adapted) ritual

It’s been known that an old custom of `Swearing on the Horns’ used to take place in the High Gate area every year between 17th and 19th Century.  For the most part  these proceedings seem to have a farcical element (if not all) to it.   However,  Hern’s Tribe began to re-interpret and  enact this Ceremony some years ago, at Queen’s Woods (along with the `Windsor Hern ritual’ – another old custom that is said to be done for the well-being of the Sovereignty of this land).

Join us for a special Summer event outdoors in North London, at Queen’s Woods, for this Ceremony. Participate in it, and swear on the Horns of Hern, for your well-being, and that of the land, and make an oath of your promise to Hern or the Green-Man of the land in return.. to do your honorable best for the land and it’s people!

Afterwards, join in with festivities, drumming & singing, and Summer feasting.. and perhaps some Story telling …as the evening approach… of Fairies, Dragons, and magical realms.

Bring drums, masks, horns (if you have any), food & drinks, and any poetry & songs to share!

Date: Saturday 29th June 2013

Time: 2.00pm to 4.00pm (core ceremony). Socials ongoing afterwards till last person leaves!

Venue: Central clearing at Queen’s Woods, North London.

How to get there: Get to `Highgate tube station’ (northern line), then to main road ( Archway Road). Turn in to Wood Lane, which becomes Queen’s Wood Road half way through. On the left hand side, at this bend is a formal entrance (with sign board) to the park. We’ll have ribbons tied up to mark the way!
