Annular Solar Eclipse- full details – Sunday 26th February 2017 (and deciphering scientific diagram)

As you know we’ve already had the penumbral Lunar Eclipse a week and a half ago, and the counterpart ..  the Solar Eclipse will be occurring in a few days(Eclipses always occur in pairs, separated by 2 weeks).

I’ve downloaded the detailed Eclipse-diagram of visibility / location data from NASA website (Eclipse diagram/data (c) Fred Espenak – link at the bottom).

Annular Solar Eclipse is when the Moon eclipses the Sun (as viewed from Earth by us)..  but moon does not fully cover the Sun.  So at the greatest Eclipse, the Moon covers the central disc of the Sun..but there is a ring of Sun showing around it – the so called Ring of Fire.  During the progress of this Eclipse (while its getting into the `greatest Eclipse’ position slowly..and also afterwards, there is also an effect called the Diamond Ring .. that can be seen on the edges of the moon..  (called Baily’s Beads- caused by light shining through valleys on the Moon’s surface).

Annular Solar Eclipse (26Feb2017) Details:

How long is this Eclipse?

Important point to remember is that, at any one location on the Earth, the actual Solar Eclipse is only visible for few minutes at most.   BUT it will be seen at different parts of the world at various times..  and at each part ..for slightly different duration.

Maximum Eclipse duration:

This happens around 13:16hrs UT,  and for a duration of  1 min 22 seconds..  and will be visible only for those at South pacific ocean…off the coast of Chile!  (Note: Although the Sun is Eclipsed for the longest at this point, it is not covered the most amount at this point.  That happens later..but for a shorter duration).

Greatest Eclipse and its duration:

This is when the largest amount of the Sun is covered by the Moon..  and  takes place at 14:53 hrs  (Universal Time), and will be visible for 44 seconds, from a point in South Atlantic Ocean.   (note: sometimes the Greatest Eclipse happens for lesser duration).

Penumbral start & end of Eclipse:

There are two types of shadows formed by the Moon when it comes in front of the Sun..  ie the shadow that Earth Passes through.  Umbral shadow is the darkest part, where from under it, we see nothing of the Sun.  Penumbral shadow is a more lighter part, and we will see the Sun through it..

  • P1 : The Penumbral part of the eclipse will be first visible at  12:10hrs   UT  (seen from South pacific ocean…off the coast of Chile as Sun rises for them locally).
  • P4:  The penumbral part of the Eclipse will be last visible at 17:36 hrs UT (seen from Africa – Zambia/  Botswana – before night falls locally there)

The Umbral  Eclipse data:

This is when the Sun is actually visibly blocked by a dark disc (Moon coming between us and the Sun).  In scientific  notations, we give this 4 sets of readings..  when it first starts (first contact/ start of Umbral Eclipse; 2nd contact;  when Eclipse begins to end; when final umbral eclipse fully ends.

  • U1 : 13:15 hrs UT
  • U2 : 13:16 hrs UT
  • Greatest Eclipse :  14:53 hrs UT
  • U3 : 16:30 hrs UT
  • U4 : 16:31 hrs UT

Here are the NASA diagrams created/provided  by Fred Espanak, where all this data has been taken from:

Below, for those interested in scientific notations and wanting to learn, is an annotated diagram showing sections  where the Eclipse Data can be obtained.  All annotations (c) Mani Navasothy) .

I’ll be adding a general astrological chart (drawn for the moment of greatest Eclipse and it’s location) later.  (going to take a bit of work) .

Partial Lunar Eclipse – 7th August 2017 – what you’ll see & where

Partial Lunar Eclipse – 7th August 2017 – what you’ll see & where

Hi all.. getting some advance info out for the next Lunar Eclipse (due in August 2017).  Here’s some graphics, based on NASA’s data.

The following is a world map showing  where this Partial Lunar Eclipse can be seen from (map by Fred Espenak of NASA).   Some parts of the world will see all of it.  Others will see only parts of it …either during their local moon-rise or moon-set moments.  It’s shown in the map.

Explanations about P1, P4, U1, U4 etc  (scientific terms):

The moment when an eclipse starts/  ends are given special names / tags in astronomy..   (they are moments of time..  ie Universal time/  GMT etc)…  and they are labelled P1, P2, P3, P3  for penumbral shadow sections of the eclipse, and U1, U2, U3, U4 for Umbral shadow parts of the Eclipse.

P1 is when Moon starts to enter the Penumbral shadow of the Earth.  Moon is seen as a reddish colour (aka The Blood moon)…but still fully visible.

U1 is when Moon further enters the darker Umbral shadow of the Earth..  This is where part of the moon will actually go black.. (This one is a partial Lunar Eclipse…So only a part of the full moon will disappear).

U4 is the moment when the moon fully comes out of any Umbral (dark) shadow of the Earth…but some parts of the moon will still be in the lighter penumbral shadow so will be seen as reddish.

P4 is the moment when the moon fully comes out of penumbral contact…  and end of the eclipse!

(note: Sometimes   the eclipse is only Penumbral..  so the data will be just P1, P2, P3, and P4).

Rahu & Ketu – The serpent demons who swallowed the Sun and Moon (Eclipses).

Rahu & Ketu swallow the Sun & Moon and cause the Eclipses, according to hindu myths. They represent the north & south nodes, and are given `planets’ designation in vedic astrology.

Rahu & Ketu  are – according to Hindu mythologies – the  serpent demons who swallow the Sun and Moon! This occurrence is of course a Solar Eclipse or a Lunar Eclipse (`Sooriya Grahanam’  and `Chandra Grahanam’  in Tamil language).

These demons – one with a human head and snake tail, and the other with a snake head and human body – were not always 2 separate beings!  In fact they were one demon (Asuran).

What’ s the story?  Why did they split?  And why do they taunt the Sun and Moon ?

I’ll have to write it later.

Fears & Phobias of Eclipses

As we head towards an annular Solar Eclipse on 20th May, and then a lunar eclipse on the 4th of June, 2012, I am aware that there are many people in the world – of certain religions – for whom this is a time of  fear and trepidation!

For example, Hindu scriptures of ancient times, advise people not to eat or drink anything for the actual duration of any eclipses.  In the case of Solar eclipses, this is usually few minutes, but I remember from my own (Hindu) childhood days back in Sri Lanka, how long the lunar eclipses used to take, and how my grandmother used to say not to eat anything.

In fact I recall that we were not even allowed to look at a Lunar eclipse at night – directly- and had to look at its reflection in a bowl of water!  Yes, Solar eclipses should never be looked upon with naked eyes ) nothing short of high strength welders glass is safe!). That’s the Science. But not even scientists worry about lunar eclipses damaging people’s eye sights!

Then there’s the other fact that quite often, Indian astrologers (and others) have predicted violence and all sorts of turmoil across the world after eclipses. (They did for the triple eclipses in same month, last year. But no such major world unrest came to pass, apart from the usual middle-eastern wars, and a number of long term dictators or terrorist leaders being `captured, killed or taken down’!

It’s well known that in certain cultures, pregnant women are advised to stay indoors and avoid looking at Eclipses, to prevent their babies developing defects. Such cultures seem to advise prayers, fasting and ritual bathing, particularly in holy rivers.

Recently, this month, in the United Kingdom, Channel 4 television broadcast  – as part of their `Body Shock’ series – the plight of a 6 year old Colombia boy called Deider, who had a mole on his back so large that it was like a `shell’ and he was nick-named the `Turtle boy’ by some prejudiced people of his community. Those people had also held the belief that during pregnancy, Deider’s mother had one day gone to get the washing from the cloths line, and happen to have accidentally witnessed a full solar eclipse – which according to her culture’s beliefs would result in exposed mothers giving birth to disfigured babies. (Good news is various medical surgeons have operated on the boy and removed the large mole, so he now leads a normal life).

I do not know if my mother was exposed to Eclipse light when she was pregnant with me. But I do remember that when I was young, my father took me out to show me a solar eclipse, by holding some strong filters (film negatives).  This is not sufficient at all – by the way, and never should be tried !  The same one, we watched via a reflection being projected on to an inside wall.

In one of his books.  the late Issac Assimov – a brilliant Science-fiction writer- write a story called `Nightfall’  and later expanded it as a full novel. It depicts an alternate human society in another planet, where they had not witnessed a Solar Eclipse for centuries. There are religious classes and scientists amongst them, and the novel explores the panic, preparations and unravelling of a whole society, when they face their first ever eclipse! It was very much an end of the world scenario. (which is something we ourselves supposedly face at the end of 2012! That’s another matter).
In my view, Hindu culture – one of the oldest religions of the world (12,000 yrs or more) – does have very good vedic astrological techniques that seem to be highly accurate in its predictive powers. So there may well be some truth in avoiding drinking or eating food, especially when it says Eclipse is better for cleansing, forgiving, prayers and meditative work. As far as science is concerned, there is absolutely no reason why eclipses – solar or lunar – should be feared by anyone!  Our Sun & Moon have been getting eclipsed several times, every year, for as long as they have been in existence. I imagine a sudden blockage of the Sun in the middle of the day would alarm any primitive life form – birds, animals and members of neolithic tribes. For Sun worshiping cultures like the ancient Aztecs & Mayas of the South americas, eclipses would have had terrible and intense meanings. But I also imagine they would have worked out the stellar patterns and learnt to forecast when it would occur.

I have been drawn to Eclipses, and been doing all sorts of magical works during and based on eclipses – for a good 15 years now. I personally see them as comic accelerators, and course-correctors. A recent magical work with my partner during an eclipse started to produce such noticeable behavioural changes between us, that any lingering doubts as to the power of eclipses is far gone- from my mind. Which was one reason I began to write it all in a book, `Eclipse Magic’.

As far as fears and phobias are concerned – on eclipses – it had never really occurred to me to fear them.
