On Pradosham, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra & Rudraksha chanting beads

On Pradosham, Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra & Rudraksha chanting beads:

Pradosham (Prathosham):

Today is Pradosham – a special day for worshiping the Hindu God Shiva.
This happens twice a month.. a few days prior to full moon and new moon.
It is a day to worship and pray to Shiva, and seek the clearing of our karma, and release from the ever going karmic cycles of life-death-reincarnation-life-death-and on.

Myth of Mrakandayar:

It is said in Hindu myths that when a boy (Markandeyan) was born, his parents were told he will die on his 16th year. While they were happy to have a child, they were sad to know what is to come. However Markandeyar began to grow and became a devotee of Lord Shiva, and learnt the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (among other things).. and used its power to seek Shiva’s help. And on his 16th birthday, when Lord of Death came for Markandeya, Lord Shiva appeared and warded off Lord of Death.and thus Markandeya was saved.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra:

Here is that Maya Mrityunjaya Mantra / Tryambakam Mantra / Markandeya Mantra:

“Om tryambakaṃ yajāmahe
sugandhiṃ puṣṭivardhanam
urvārukamiva bandhanān
mṛtyormukṣīya mā’mṛtāt”

It means :
1.Om, We Worship the Three-Eyed One (Lord Shiva),
2.Who is Fragrant (Spiritual Essence) and Who Nourishes all beings.
3. May He severe our Bondage of Samsara (Worldly Life), like a Cucumber (severed from the bondage of its Creeper), …
4: … and thus Liberate us from the Fear of Death, by making us realize that we are never separated from our Immortal Nature.
(note: meaning taken from http://greenmesg.org/m…/sri_shiva-mahamrityunjaya_mantra.php

Rudraksha chanting beads/Mala:

Hindus often use the Rudraksha mala (necklace) to chant the Mantras and count the number of chants.. It can amount to 108 times.. or 1008.. or several hundred Thousand times.. which takes purity and discipline over many days..weeks..months to complete.

Rudraksha beads are seeds coming from the Rudraksha tree.. It is said that Shiva once thought of the suffering and plights of people on Earth, and he wept for their suffering. His tears fell to earth and where they had landed the special Rudraksha tree grew..and so the seeds from that tree became a divine symbol of Shiva’s compassion for humanity. The seeds have many `heads’.. either 1, 2, 4, 6 ..12 and are expensive depending on how they are harvested and sold. (fakes abound too in the market).

Do’s/ Don’ts on Rudraksha:

Although people wear these beads and walk about like they are models on a religious fashion show.. the power of the Rudraksha beads is in total secrecy. Wearing it gives protection to the wearer. It must not be seen or touched by anyone else.. or when you have not bathed or eaten meat of any kind. also not during sex.. or if you have touched your genitals then don’t touch the Rudraksha. Also during chanting, you must not use index finger. You must not wear it and go to the toilet ..or ever place it on Earth (if you do all the hundreds or 1000s of chant powers you accumulate on it will be gone immediately and you have to start again). It’s protective power comes from not the seeds or mala (necklace) itself.. but in the way you use it to chant mantras many hundreds or thousand times..

If you must wear a Rudraksha beads as fashion item..to show how spiritual you are..fine.. but keep that set for show..and keep a more private mala for actual spiritual/ magical work..and follow the rules I have stated above..

I once wore mine in public…(only time) when carrying a Kavadi at a Hindu Chariot procession…dancing along the Durga Chariot for 4-5 hours. No sooner had that event finished.. I was putting it away..and my mala fell to the ground. So almost a year of work was gone.. I then reconsecrated it in sacred temple waters ..and rededicated it to Shiva and began using it for chanting again.. (moral of this is that… Gods grounded any public energies..and I had to reset!)

(I have much more say on this.. but it is intensely private..so plan to share insights only in a face to face course or workshop).

Upcoming Pradosham dates (2017):
-3rd & 17th October
-1st & 15th November
– 1st & 15th December

I had wanted to write about these 3 items for over year and finally here it is. 🙂

Last year for Shiva Rathri (night of Shiva) I organised a woodland fire ritual & chanting..but this year I went straight to temple.. However I hope to organise a Pradosham ceremony/ and/or a Shiva rathri ritual in the future..for those who are very serious about this work.

Om Nama Shivaya.

ps. incidentally when I did not know any mantra’s I started chanting with just `Om Nama Shivaya’ and gained great & immediate relief/ benefits, which led me to the Maha Mantra (Hare Krishna), Gayatri Mantra (Om Bhur Buvasvana..) and to this Mrityunjaya Mantra ..and many more.

We will be gathering outside the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (riverside gate) / Bankside Pier area at 7.30pm.   After designating ritual roles, getting our lanterns & costumes setup, we’ll begin a slow and social walk along bankside..

We’ll be walking along south bank riverside walk… from Globe Theatre, past Millennium bridge (south side), Tate Modern Gallery,  Blackfriars overground station / bridge,  Oxo Tower, Gabriel’s Wharf, and finally end just outside National Theatre.  Our Halloween ceremony is expected to be held in the open public circular concrete `performance’ area along the riverside (see photo attached)- this is subject to local circumstances, other crowd etc.If it’s not possible there, we’ll be nearby so keep an eye out.

Meeting time/ shedule:
Please get to outside steps of Shakespear’s Globe Theatre / Bankside pier by 7.30pm. We’ll get organised and begin walk at 8pm.   We hope the 1000m walk will only take us about 1 hour at an extremely leisurely procession/ festive walking speed. 🙂  So we’ll be gathering outside the National Theatre area (end of walk) by 9pm..and do a short Samhain ritual by about 9.15pm.   Then we’ll continue socialising.

Ritual:

Due to the public space, the ritual team will be organised in advance ..so we can arrive at end point and perform the ritual without much fuss.   There is bound to be general public watching..  so we’ll be asking experienced ritualists to help in advance ( 1 week before) to volunteer for parts and get ritual prepared.. and be in costume../  masks.

Food/drinks:
-Please bring small picnic-style food and drinks to share.
-Bring things for self.. and if feeling generous, something to share with others..

Safety notes: Everyone is asked to take extra care with their own personal safety as we’ll be in a busy public place.  Keep valuables with you at all times..  or with a trusted friend who is not playing a big role in ritual.   beware of thieves/ pickpockets, any silly protesters (who don’t like pagans) and may try to cause a wrangle.   If this happens..just step away from it..  do not be baited..  and just get out asap…and get far away to a safer place.

No swords…no athames..or other `real’ weapons – or anything that might alarm the general public /police. We play safe and nice.. And you are responsible for your own good behaviour and health & safety!!

A copyright note:  I’ve been running these (particularly woodland-based) `Wiccan Apprentice’ courses for many years, as 1-day courses, 3-part courses and 5-part courses (since 2006), and as e-witch Apprentice course (9 modules) since 2012.   While the subject and contents of Wicca do not exclusively belong to me or anyone, I am an initiated Gardnerian Wiccan High Priest with authority to teach and train others, and  this particular way of grouping Wicca topics and delivering them has been my own `innovation’ since 2006, as evidenced by records (flyers, blogs, website publicit & course notes)  that I am able to produce!  Anyone embarking on teaching Wicca should start from ground up and devise their own form syllabus/ grouping.

A note on charging a fee:   While for decades the teaching and running of courses on Wicca has been done by hundreds of established Wiccans/ Elders of the Craft (for a fee), the process of actual Initiating someone (properly prepared) into a Coven has always been done freely and without any fee, by all respectable Coven leaders including myself. The fees we charge are for the preparation of courses, organising an event and giving our time as Teachers.

Attend out woodland Lammas / Harvest Ceremony in London (6th Aug’17)

Outdoor Lammas 2017: Harvest Gathering & Ceremony

Join us for an outdoor Harvest Gathering to celebrate LAMMAS 2017 – with Ceremony and social. This is an open ritual held in an outdoor park/woods with easy public access.. (please read this info section fully. Thanks).

About Lammas:

“Lammas is one of the 8 seasonal festivals celebrated by most Pagans, Wiccans/ Witches and druids in UK. At the time of Lammas, at the height of his power, the Corn King gives up his life force to the land! This is harvest time in the fields, where Corn is cut down and other such grain are harvested. John Barleycorn is `baked’ and sacrificed. In God mythology, the God willingly gives himself up and the Goddess cuts him down, so that his energy may feed the land. Just as the fallen seed sleeps safely within the soil, till winter passes and next spring, so the spirit of the Lammas-King enters the underworld.

On a personal note – we celebrate the harvest and rewards & results of all our hard works so far in the year.. honour the land & fields, and feast and celebrate with family and friends and community.

Fees: £3

Date: sunday 6th August 2017.

Event duration: 2pm to 6pm

Venue:  Queen’s Woods.    Near Highgate Station · London

Google map (short url) : https://goo.gl/maps/Pof1DEzpz5w

Meeting point: Garden area of `Woodmans Pub’ on Archway Road from 2pm. We’ll walk (15mins) together to the woods – for ceremony & woodland feasting. Some free parking on side road as it’s sunday.

  • Please meet at the Garden area of `Woodmans Pub’ on Archway Road from 2pm. This provides some to have a drink and socialise, get to know others who are attending – Organisers Mani & friends) will be there to socialise and make newcomers feel at ease. We’ll then go together to the woods –

• There is some free parking on main road (wood lane..) as it;s Sunday free parking. The walk from pub to woodland ritual spot can take about 10-15mins depending on how briskly we walk.

In the woods – altar & food altar:

We’ll be using a slightly different location.. because our usual spot gets busy with public/ kids/ other family local events in summer time. So we’ll use a spot away from that – (about 100 yards away where we held the Woodland Beltane ritual..).

Once main rustic altar has been set up (magically aware during set-up) you can add to it with your own items. We’ll also be setting up a `main food altar’ as this is harvest time and feasting takes particular importance. Bread, fruits, cakes, wine, drinks and other sensible food items will be placed on the food altar (other snack food items can be brought out during feasting after ritual).

RITUAL : Intention & outline:

The energy that you all add makes a big magical difference. This gathering is to mark the turning of the seasonal wheel, celebrate personal harvests & achievements, and prepare to receive our own rewards.

At Lammas, just as Corn king makes a sacrifice, we also can make a personal declaration of what we are willing to give up, in order to make space for new better positive rewards to enter our lives.

Our ritual will blend eclectic shamanism and wicca to create this Lammas magic!

• Scene-setting pathworking & Opening prayers

• Sacred space created : Purification & consecrations, Magic Circle, Elemental quarters.

• energy raising with chants, drums, dance

• Enactment of Corn-King sacrifice

• Blessing of Bread & Mead

• Closing: Quarters & Circle

• Feasting & socials

• Return to Pub for more socials (may continue till late!)

What you can bring:

This is a seasonal gathering with Magical ceremony & community social. So do bring your pagan/ shamanic/ witchy looks and tools:

• Your ritual cloths/ robes/ cloaks
• Staff / wands / antlers / tribal masks

• Drums & musical instruments

• Lanterns & candles (no naked candles on ground please). **note : no fires or camping allowed in these woods!

• Crystals / runes / divination tools

• Poetry / invocations (learnt or to read)

• weather-proof clothing (no telling what weather will be).

• Ground sheets/ blankets to sit on..wrap up.

• Insect repellant oils/ sprays

• Torch light (if staying late in the woods).

See you there for a magical time. Bright Blessings.

Woodland Midsummer Ritual by Hern’s Tribe – 17thJune 2017 (North London)

Join us  to celebrate Midsummer  2017..  with ceremony & socials.  We’ll drum, dance and make merry …after the ceremony to honour the Sun that’s reached the height of his power.  We’ll also be marking/ celebrating our own personal achievements 🙂

 date:  Saturday  17th June 2017.

Duration: 2pm to 5pm.  (meeting from 1.30pm)

`This marks the height of the Summer, and the longest day of the year. Astrologically, it is exactly the point when the Sun enters the sign of Cancer (which is the natural house of the Moon!). The new-born Sun of the midwinter (Yule) has grown to it’s fullest potential, and so pagans are mindful at Midsummer that the wheel turns. It is when the previously defeated Holy-King returns, challenges the Oak-King and wins. Thus at Midsummer, the rein of the Oak King ends and the one of Holy King begins. Midsummer games such as tug of war enact this battle between summer and winter forces. In terms of the God myths, it is a time for the God to become Sun-King, and take his place on the throne of responsibility for his people’

**NEW** Wicca New Moon: Gaia-Selene Healing Circles in London (monthly, outdoors)

Dear all..

As of the coming new moon, we are starting a new monthly ritual circle in the woods.. Wicca New Moon : Gaia-Selene Circles. If the full moon is for bubbling cauldrons and magic brimming to the surface, then new moons are for seeds, intents, going deeper within for magical & psychic development, Healing & transformative work.

These Wicca New Moon Circles  involve taking time to connect to Gaia/Earth & trees, reaching inner stillness, peace and flow of magic, and the use of that magic for healing and empowerment. We began these Wicca new moon circles in May 2017, and as they grow and evolve, it is expected to form a regular group of people (and leading to a possible training Coven).

Facilitator:

These circles are facilitated by Mani Navasothy – initiated Wiccan High Priest, with over 21 years of The Craft & Coven experiences including training and initiating Wiccans.

suggested Fee: £3

The tutor travels from south London to run these events, by popular requests for events in North London. Fees collected therefore go towards travel & costs of running this event (candles, spell craft items, cakes & wine for blessing etc).

At these events, the following will be covered :

• Gaia meditations.

• Personal Energy work (varies)

• Wicca New Moon Ceremony

• Some Wicca Basics practise  (Consecration, Circle, Elemental quarters)

• Healing & spell craft (Subject to development)

Your attendance:

You may attend once or regularly and gain benefit for your self, and/or do healing work for your friends & loved ones (ask them permission first please..).

Or you may simply attend and gain grounding, centre the self, and energising your self.

These monthly gatherings will open with a basic wiccan consecrations & circle set-up, then extend into meditation, chant, and finally extended Magic & Healing works at hand; Be also open to working intuitively.

Attend with an open mind and a trusting heart.

As these are evening events in the woods, please dress warmly, possibly with water-proof clothing.

Bring a blanket for wrapping as there will sections where we’ll be seated and be still for meditative parts;  Also bring a cushion and a small picnic blanket to sit on for comfort (often the ground can be damp.. ). Bringing a small flask of hot drink for your self will be an added bonus.

Note: Initially, these monthly Wicca New moon Gaia-Selene circles will run from  May’17 for 3 months and continue into Autumn/ Winter,  subject to further interests.

Venue:

Queen’s Woods, north London (nearest tube: High Gate – northern line).

Meeting point :

Please be in the garden area of The Woodman’s Pub, Archway Road –  We will all walk together (15 mins) to a suitable spot in woods for the Wicca Circle. (exact woodland location may change on the night. So please meet at pub garden).

usual duration/ schedules (apprx):

we meet at the woodman’s pub garden/ patio area from about 7pm.  Around 7.30pm we walk together (15mins) to the woods, via Wood Lane (com out of pub garden and turn sharp right ).  After communally setting up the sacred space & altar, we begin ceremony (8.30pm latest..).   Ritual ends and we begin tidy up/ leave by 10.30pm latest (or earlier). All times are approximate, and I try to be a little flexible- but due to it being a week day, we must try to be punctual s attendees can get home not so late usig public transport.

Note to Late arrivals:

Because we have to set-up, do ceremony and return by 10pm, we regret we can not wait for late-comers.

Future dates in 2017:

  • Monday 25th September 2017
  • Monday 23rd October 2017
  • Monday 20th November 2017
  • Monday 18th December 2017

Woodland Beltane Gathering & Maypole Dancing 2017

Join us  to celebrate BELTANE 2017..  with ceremony & Maypole Dance.  We’ll drum, dance and choose a May King & May Queen.  And feast and frolic!  (sensibly!)

You will not want to miss this..  !  (just look at a few photos (below) of what we did. That’s when our ritual `team’ organically came together.  So this year it’s bound to be more festive, more frolics.. and more magic!!

Mayday falls on a Monday and no doubt mny will have coven & other events to attend that whole weekend (Fire festival in Edinburgh,  Hastings Green Man festival etc).  So we have staggered our own woodland festivities to the following weekend..  It extends the Beltane festivities..and gives all something to look forward to (without clashes) and have a final big event.. !!   🙂

• ***** Fee: £3 per person **

About Beltane:

`The veil between the world of men and fairy (or spirit) is said to thin twice a year, at Beltane and at Samhain, which are on opposite points of the year wheel. At Beltane  (May eve) the land is at it’s most lush and green, and fertile. If Spring Equinox is the time of fertility and mating in the animal kingdom, then Beltane is one of courting couples making commitment to one another- and Handfastings! In the God-Goddess myths, this is when the playful God is said to commit to the Goddess – which is symbolised by the Sacred Marriage! The Maypole dance that is traditional at this time symbolises the fertile powers of the masculine, penetrating the land, and the ribbons danced and woven around it lock that power! A ring of flower at the tip of the Maypole signifies the feminine. Magical working with the Fay (Fairies) is an important feature at this time, in contrast to the magical work with the departed spirits at Samhain, the opposite point’ (taken from www.WitchcraftandMagic.uk )

RITUAL :

Out ritual *Team will conduct key aspects of the ceremony, with plenty of opportunities for everyone to get  involved in the actual ritual   – ie with elements calling, chants, magical work and so on.

****Fee:  £3 per person***

RITUAL items to bring:

– Ritual cloths/ robes/ cloaks / ground sheets / blankets
– Staff / wands / antlers / tribal masks / flower crowns (No athame!! ..  No swords!)
– Drums & musical instruments
– Lanterns / candles / lighter  (all candles in lanterns only please, unless it’s large pillar-candles.  Strictly No tea-lights on ground or trees!!)
– Crystals / runes / divination tools
– Poetry / invocations (learnt or to read)

Handfasting / confirming Pagan marriage vows:

In the past, couples have asked organiser about this.   Handfasting is a big event in itself, and we do not wish it to be reduced by being included in a public ceremony as a `side-event’.  It also detracts from the focus of everyone else.   However, after Blessings of Cakes & Wine (and while still within our magical circle/  sacred space), we may consider couples who are already bonded, to declare their vows / re-affirm their vows by our altar.

**(please message Mani- Wiccan High Priest-  in private in advance to arrange this – or simply to arrange your own separate day for handfasting!)**

Adult themes :

As this is a fertility festival, there is bound to be  jokes, flirtatious behaviour, adult humour throughout the event..

No Children:

We ask no children / babies in prams etc to be brought.

Behaviour / alcohol/ drugs policy

This is in a public woodland/ park.    We wish to make sure  the good reputation/ credibility of our group/ members/ organisers are maintained.   So please BE on good behaviour.    No drugs/  substances allowed.  Anyone found disrupting will be asked to leave..  and in extreme cases, organisers may call the Police for the safety & well-being of everyone else present.  Don’t ruin it for all.. Be good!  🙂

Photos/ privacy:

Please do not take photos during set-up, run-through or ritual..   Other times, it’s fine.  It’s in a public place so we can not stop the public walking through or taking pics.   If worries about your privacy / identity,  please wear a ritual mask to safeguard your identity in photos that others may take of the group.

Meeting place (Woodman’s Pub):

Gather in the Woodman’s Pub from 1.00pm..  Get to `High Gate’ Tube station..  come up to manin road. Turn right.  Pub is just 30 seconds away.

Map (High Gate tube/ pub & Queen’s Wood)

After Ceremony & some socials in the woods, we will head back to the pub (woodmans) for warmth and more drinks/ socials.  It all depends on how long we all hang out in the woods with lanterns / candles..
