Extinction Rebellion: Possible pitfalls & personal concerns..

Right from the beginning..I have struggled intuitively to get behind this latest movement for saving the planet.

I’ve had some strong personal views which could be construed as rebelling against the rebels.. (bear in mind I’ve been doing eco-magic and campaigning, participating in eco-causes, protests, fundraisers – for many many years..). I’ve finally started to have dialogues with a few close friends on this matter, trying to understand – no this new movement for an existing cause – but my self, and why I intuitively feel detached or not involved in it.

I’ve studied the websites, the symbol, seen enough graffiti on walls of London, stuck postcard posters on bus stops.. read about it on articles, read friends’ facebook posts and personal accounts.. politely said no to their invites to go join these protest events and more.. (bit also magically welcomed and supported some of the XR participants at my ritual, and offered subtle advise on using magic.. for further their efforts for success).

Matters such as the very name `Extinction Rebellion’ and their symbol, and their urban vandal/gang-like activities bother me.

Maybe I am tired of it all after 20+ years of it, maybe my own personal life circumstances have changed my focus. Maybe my age itself and lacking physical stamina deters me?

Chronian Tilt
Chronian Tilt –  Visionary Art (c) Mani Navasothy . Painted 29May1996.  Shows how the modern world of industry and pollution are weighing down the planet more so than the past. Hour glass shows sands running out..  over a black and polluted water.

I’ve put off doing this write-up for a while.. knowing that once I do, my views become open to all to read, interpret, engage, align with or argue against! It will alienate people..my views.. people who thought I am one of them will see me in a different light.. be a bit shocked, annoyed, disappointed, disgusted, angry even. But strangers and friends who feel the same way as me but have been cautious or afraid to voice it will be relieved an get behind me..(that will make me a figurehead for a Rebel against Rebellion.. But it does not mean that I am opposing the desperate need for action to save the world.. That cause remains).

So let me get to some of my transpersonal and magical concerns about this XR movement.

1. Name “Extinction Rebellion”

Catchy and emotive.. and easy for the masses to get behind with. But what is it actually saying..? Unless someone explains it… what does it mean if you just heard the phrase `Extinction Rebellion’ ? What is the call for action? Are you a rebel calling for Extinction? Oh yes.. that meaning is there too.. Its ambiguous.. and can muddle up the subconscious mind.. like the example of someone shouting `DON’T Look’ (nearly anyone who hears it will turn and look…human nature). Blessings such as `May you never hunger’ subconsciously enforce the action words …and in this case, `You’ and `hunger’ . Never is a word that gets lost in the language of the emotive subconscious mind. A better blessing – one I campaign for – is `May you have good food’.

So now look at the phrase `Extinction Rebellion’ again.
What is it telling your deeper mind when you are not thinking about it consciously?! `Go get extinct’?

In my view, a better phrase could have been `Rebel against Extinction’ (yes okay that’s clunky.. but it is not ambiguous). Or better still..find a name that does not use the negative word `Extinction’ !! Take a leaf ..nay a whole tree from `Green Peace’.. no words in there that have any negative connotations..but they take action.. campaign..protest…(sometimes, not-peaceful protect!).

2. The Symbol.

At a first glance, when it first started to appear on social media etc, I ignored it…thinking it was some weird pop-band sign. It vaguely reminded me of the Rune Daeg (morning/ new dawn) sideways. I did not equate it to a hour glass…(and I am normally obsessed with time.. time travel…etc. It should have occured to me..but it did not).
Why?
An hour glass has an important feature missing from their symbol..the actual sands of time..!

GaianTimes-banner2-2010-MN
Gaian Times Magazine . website banner 2011 – used the same idea of Hour Glass over Earth, to show time running out for planet Earth.   Art (c) Mani Navasothy 2011.

Perhaps a little cross-line to indicate it would have made that clear. Or even 2 lines.. the bottom of the glass showing it full..and top of it showing it almost empty.. That would show that time is running out.

I bring 2 other previous use / misuse of magical symbols here to aid your pondering.

  • a) the CND peace symbol..(Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) shows what I can only see as an upside down Algiz (protection) rune. Whatever it may symbolise..it has a downfacing protection rune. Everytime it is used..in every flag and poster.. its’ enforcing thee idea of `no/ weak protection’ 😦
Algiz protection rune & CND peace symbol - Mani Navasothy QuantumPhoenix.jpg
Algiz (magical) protection rune of the Vikings  compared to the CND Peace symbol (reverse of the protection rune).
  • b) The swastika symbol- used by Hindus and Pagans…and appropriated by Hitler to be a magical power symbol for Nazi cause. None of us pagans and Hindus like it…but look at the evidence of how a magical symbol used can power a cause. That was used for evil.. But we in the here and now can use good magical symbols for important earth saving causes.

The hour glass of sand running out is not exactly a good magical symbol..  if it is going to keep reinforcing the idea of that.  Just like the upside down Algiz/ protection symbol used for world peace’ everywhere that still has not produced world peace, the time running out hour glass symbol is only going to enforce that ..and not actually giving the world more living time!  (note: I myself have used the Hour glass over Earth’ symbol in Gaian Times magazine I edit..  but started using hands holding Earth’ as a more positive eco-symbol.)

3.  The graffiti approach

As I started to see central london walls with the Extinction Rebellion symbol being graffitied, in amongst other ragged and seedy sex posters, it just all felt very dirty.. and only thing it was triggering in my educated mind was associations of gang signs and vandalism!   Gangs and Vandals are the ones who just go about defacing public places with such graffiti.   A proper `saving the planet from extinction’ movement should not be doing the same!

For the uneducated..  I don’t mean those without schooling- but those with no knowledge of who the Extinction Rebellion’ is,  these symbols on london walls are just going to look like dirty or scary gang symbols..  The people will just walk on…  quickly..away from such territorial gang spots’ lest they were intruding some inter-gang location wars.. !

And as for the masses of repeat  postcard sized posters ..with big symbol and some tiny writing’ being stuck to bus stops ..  again..all I could think about was `pop band promotions in Camden’  (Camden is a north london town where alternative lifestyle/ people…like goths, heavy metal guys and girls, tourists abound).

I mean, what sensible person standing on a bus stop is going to risk leaning over and read such a poster?  I would not..in case others think am reading about some gang or pop group..  and get judged’.  Okay I personally don’t care about that..  but others might nit want to be associated with unauthorised posters stuck on bus stops!

It’s about perceptions..  and judgements by our fellow man and fellow women.

Thus far, I’ve only written about the `problems’ I have perceived personally.. or rather how the XR movement’s publicity has intruded into my life..which I had kept a distance from.

Of course I am educated in the whole matter..  but so far its been me playing Devil’s advocate.  Why? Because that will be the line the Government & majority of  Politicians, and authorities and Media will be doing.

Now let me look at my worries..!

4.  possible Burn outs & Fad days

The Extinction Rebellion movement didn’t just rise over night!   There has been a slow deep development.   The organisers’ are not just dirty hippies’ ( a phrase a news paper referred to).  The organisers are clever, educated and well-organised people, who have been plotting and planning it all for months… maye years. And they have brought this to a global level of awareness, with methodical build up over many months.

I am pleased for that – that its all emotive and peaceful..and has got everyone –  many exhausted and despairing eco-carers, campaigners, protestors – all excited! Am happy that the fire of rebellion is spreading from the old activists (the converted) to envelope and gather others who have been uninvolved so far..(the non-converted).

But my worry is one of burn out.. and peaking too soon.. before the work is done.

Its easy to be a short term activist – jump on a cause or an eco-bandwagon, and run wild with others, and feel you are doing some good.  Or some may even do it as a `rite of passage’ – harking back to the 60’s and 70’s..  This is their Hippie days…  to be lived an then peel off and work on work, career and al that – where these XR days will be just a massive social media photo album to show off to their kids..?!

Yes the build up has been slow and steady…but  look at all the peace marches & protests that has already been?

various Marches & protests – 2015 : Climate March, 2016: Stop Ivory Trade.  2016: Taiji Save Dolphin massacre.    photos (c) Mani Navasothy.

March for Climate Change!  ran for few years…still does…I think…But it’s stopped hitting my own awareness window.  Either I am a fraud who has left that bandwagon after few years, or maybe it’s just burnt out and I don’t hear much about it.. If so..  why?  Maybe because life is busier than ever..  and so many more causes are fighting for social media publicity spot in our awareness… that it all just blends into one hazy mass that we can’t relate to anymore.

What about the Occupy London movement?  I was there at St.Paul’s Cathedral..  in those days..  So were many of my friends. I went regularly..and many camped out..  But few years since then…  what has it achieved, other than as being a historical foot note or a small paragraph like this on a blog post?  Sad but a reality I must blast open.

Occupy London 2011 photos (c) Mani Navasothy .jpg
Occupy London protests 2011  -outside St.Paul’s Cathedral.  photos (c)Mani Navasothy

We..well I don’t want the Extinction Rebellion movement to become yet another foot note..of something that was just a  flash in the pan!   Even a year long activity is still a flash in the Historical pan of hundred years…!

The XR movement has to do better..   Okay yes it has punched a massive awareness hole in the hard wall of stagnating system… woken people up..made them passionate..and involved..  and maybe even confused.  But it has to have a long term plan.. to change the world – unless of course, creating a shock wave was the objective. In which case, XR has just about done it.  Well done.

But as a long term eco-carer, a magical practitioner, an earth Goddess (Gaia) worshipper and honorer of the planet, as an ongoing eco-magician who is working it in my own other ways, I want more.. much more.  I want to save the planet – for my own selfish reasons.. so that it can still be here for my nephews, and for my kids.

Will XR movement do that?

The Fellowship of The Spring ~ London Water Pilgrimage (15th April’19)

Here is a marvelous magical event that I have just come across, and of course will be joining. – Mani

water.jpg

On 15th April, the opening day of International Rebellion ~

We will be walking the ‘royal route pilgrimage’ from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey via various sacred places, springs and wells along the way.

This was the coronation route which was made by numerous monarchs over the ages. In these times we are in – we remember we are all Sovereign to the Earth, as she awakens our hearts to work in an allegiance with her, as we make this pledge of beauty with her on this day.

No one ever thinks that there are springs in this city, but yes there are literally hundreds, and some of the most iconic buildings of London are on top of them.

Join us as we walk this route together in prayer, music and song. Blessing and making offerings of beauty at various springs along the way from the Tower of London to Westminster Abbey ~ as we remember and give thanks to the waters together.

The 5th Global March for Elephants and Rhinos – Saturday 13th April’19 (London)

Join me and thousands of other supporters in a Global March for saving Elephants & Rhinos!  This is taking place on saturday 13th April’19 – all over the world…and there is one in London.  here are the details taken from their facebook page (link below).  -Mani

GMFER March for Elephants 13april2019

The 5th Global March for Elephants and Rhinos will take place on April 13th with cities around the world joining in a huge day of action for endangered wildlife.

You can join the facebook event for this (organised by group `Action for Elephants UK events’) using this link
https://www.facebook.com/events/626994967732777/

date: Saturday 13th April 2019
meeting point:
Cavendish Square, 4 Cavendish Square, London, United Kingdom
Meeting time: 11am.

Following blurb taken from facebook event organised by `Action for Elephants UK’
———
“GMFER2019 is timed to take place shortly before CITES Conference of the Parties (CoP18) in Sri Lanka on 23 May to 3 June. We will be calling for support for the CoP proposal to uplist elephants to Appendix I, the highest level of protection, and for the rejection of proposals to allow ivory trade and trade of the Southern White Rhino.

Our key domestic action will be to call for the government to ban the import of hunting trophies of endangered species to the UK. Around 2,500 gruesome trophies have been brought home by British hunters over the past decade – heads and other body parts of endangered wild animals including elephants, lions, zebras, hippos, giraffes, leopards – all killed for ‘sport’. Thousands of lions are raised on farms in South Africa for the brutal ‘canned hunting’ industry, where they are kept caged from birth and finally shot by trophy hunters. These cruel and barbaric practices continue to decimate already endangered species and drive them closer to extinction.

Trophy hunting is cruel and indefensible – it has no place in this day and age, when the ongoing ‘sixth extinction’ has already claimed 60% of the Earth’s fauna since 1970. We call on the government to take an unequivocal stand and permanently ban the import of hunting trophies from all endangered species.

The broader theme of the event is Save Our Wild World. Wild animals and their habitats are everywhere under threat. Without maximum protections by the global community and CITES, elephants, rhinos, lions, giraffes and other endangered megafauna will face certain extinction in the wild. Those protections include giving them Appendix I or II status, rejecting all proposals to downlist endangered species and reopen trade in ivory and other body parts, and getting countries to unite on banning hunting trophy imports.”

A Tale of Two PFL’s : My journey in serving the Pagan Community

Before `Pagan Frontiers of London’ ..there existed and still does.. The Pagan Federation: London, where I held the post of Events Manager for some 7 years (2004 to 2012). I organised & ran open rituals, masked balls, Gaia conferences, created and ran PF: London website, and even started the facebook page & groups for PFL that still continues (just seen my old events art work in there that dates back to 2009 or something).

pfl m

After stepping down from the PFL Events Manager post ..to seek out new pagan worlds and boldly go to new magical frontiers (am a Star Trek fan), I started `Pagan Frontiers of London’ as a gateway site fit for the glitzy colourful event-driven social media era – to share info, events and my own service to the Pagan community.

pfl org

Even in the wilderness years (2013 to 2015), when I had minimal contact with PFL events, I was very much supportive of PF and PF: London (how can I not…half my friends and Elders are still within it).

In 2018, I re-joined the PFL events team again, and as of January 2019, now hold the post of `PF London Social Media Officer’. This is a great honour and a thrill.. to be part of the Pagan Federation (I’ve been a member since mid 90’s..). I cherish the knowledge that back in 1970’s several Wiccan Elders got together to start the Pagan Federation.. (and I am of their wiccan lineage). So the PF is `family’ to me in more ways than one.

And as always, I fondly remember the late Jean Williams, who was `my’ District Manager in those days, who taught me much about serving the community in PF, and tempered my wild ways (well a little). I remember her every week as I pass by the hospital in Highgate – even now- the place where I used to visit her in her last few days.

So many others have stood by my side or behind me and supported me since I began serving the PF in 2004. My ritual group Hern’s Tribe, late Maureen Brown (High Priestess), Chris Crowley (prev. PF President), Vivianne Crowley (High Priestess & my Craft Elder), Mike Stygal (prev. PF president), Rufus & Melissa (prev. PFL events managers), Caroline Westbury (High Priestess & friend), Christina Oakley (Treadwells bookshop), Geraldine Beskin (Atlantis bookshop), Luthaneal Adams (prev. DM for PFL), Paul Newman (PFL Treasurer since 2004), Andrew T (PFL events team), Jeremy Morgan (Druid path), Geoff Miles (Heathen path), Philip John Parkyn (Heathen path), my sister Vathani, my prev.magical partner April, Reggie, Paul Harvey, Rob T, Marcus Lee (technomage) …to mention but a few.

I have never been alone. And always stood on their strong shoulders, and been nurtured by their affections.

And beyond them, there are my Gods & Goddesses and my faith in them – and they do put me through my paces, but also offer inner-strength. Because this work is never easy.. being in spotlight, running events, accepting good & bad projections from people, and still finding the light within to help them.
So my admiration and respect goes to any and all people who stand in spotlight, take all the likes & hates, and still get on with serving the Gods, the land and its people.

Bright Blessings

Prince Charles is The Doctor ! (A personal Doctor Who story)

Everyone knows that I am a long term (35 yrs) fan of the BBC TV sci-fi show `Doctor Who’ – where a Time Lord called The Doctor steals a time ship called the TARDIS and runs away from his home plant / people..(Gallifrey /Time Lords).   I started watching it back in Sri Lanka, when i was very little..  probably about 10 yrs of age..  And it was Jon Pertwee as The Doctor, battling strange wax dummies and even stranger alien in armor  (Spearhead from Space & Time Warrior).  At the time I was totally unaware of who the Doctor was..(pardon the pun)..  or anything about his time ship..  I just saw a few scary stories.

charles is the Doctor - spoof
Prince Charles is The Doctor .  Fan art cover – just for fun!   art (c) Mani Navasothy.  http://www.QuantumPhoenix.net

It was when i was back  in UK in 1985, that I picked up the thread again…to see Colin Baker as The Doctor in Trial of a Time Lord – where he was being tried for all his crimes of interfering on the affairs of other planets and people.. It was a stitch-up of course by the darker side of himself in another guise (The Valeyard) .

Stories?  No…my life has reflected many of these aspects too..  I was a little refugee boy aged 15, fleeing from my native land, fearing persecution, coming to UK and settling here as an alien (much like Jon Pertwee’s Doctor did in England in `Spearhead from space’).  I went on to do a B.Sc Physics degree.  And in the past 20 years I’ve gotten into all sorts of scrapes with all sorts of work, esoteric and eco communities – fighting for what I feel is right, and getting support often but also vilifications at other times..

About 5 years ago I finally bit the bullet, and started filming my own Doctor Who fan video stories..  ‘cos well I had always wanted to make my own films.. and now I could, what with digital cameras, affordable editing softwares, and good old youtube and social media to screen my videos.. Oh and friends who are so loyal that they’ll (reluctantly at times) agree to star in my videos!   Currently we are on our fan series#2, where we are telling the story of an ancient Time Lord called Lucifer who has fallen to Earth and has no mind or memory of his own.  (sounds familiar on both personal and mythological grounds ..right?) .  I also now have my own DrWho London meetup.

So when Prince Charles (next in line to be King of Great Britain! He is a radical and an environmentalist too), visited the BBC’s Doctor Who sets and they released some pictures, I was quite titillated.   And few days ago when a fan group I am in had a little caption competition with Prince Charles weilding a sonic screwdriver..  I could not resist doing a full on magazine cover with him.

Prince Charles takes my fancy – in a admiration sort of way.  He has been a rebel of the Royal Family for so long.. divorcing his wife Diana, marrying for love, putting his royal paws over issues that royals were supposed to stay impartial at, growing his own vegetables, speaking out about architecture of the past, being an avid environmentalist and all that. And so `Who’ knows, with a TARDIS at his disposal, he might make a bigger difference – that where he is now…forever on tow behind his mum HRM The Queen..  who really should have stepped down by now and let Charles be King.

So this special blog post goes in honour of Prince Charles – The Doctor!

First image of a Black hole (and Abstract & Conclusion of scientific paper, published by American Astronomical Society 10th April 2019)

Today the Scientific community and indeed the whole world (especially that of social media) is bubbling up with excitement of the release of photos – first images of a black hole.   I’ve tracked the various links to the original scientific letter published at IOPScience site. Without breaching their brilliant presentation (the Physicist in me struggles to decipher it all), here are some key sections..  like the actual images, Abstract and Conclusion.

Abstract:

When surrounded by a transparent emission region, black holes are expected to reveal a dark shadow caused by gravitational light bending and photon capture at the event horizon. To image and study this phenomenon, we have assembled the Event Horizon Telescope, a global very long baseline interferometry array observing at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. This allows us to reconstruct event-horizon-scale images of the supermassive black hole candidate in the center of the giant elliptical galaxy M87. We have resolved the central compact radio source as an asymmetric bright emission ring with a diameter of 42 ± 3 μas, which is circular and encompasses a central depression in brightness with a flux ratio gsim10:1. The emission ring is recovered using different calibration and imaging schemes, with its diameter and width remaining stable over four different observations carried out in different days. Overall, the observed image is consistent with expectations for the shadow of a Kerr black hole as predicted by general relativity. The asymmetry in brightness in the ring can be explained in terms of relativistic beaming of the emission from a plasma rotating close to the speed of light around a black hole. We compare our images to an extensive library of ray-traced general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of black holes and derive a central mass of M = (6.5 ± 0.7) × 109 M⊙. Our radio-wave observations thus provide powerful evidence for the presence of supermassive black holes in centers of galaxies and as the central engines of active galactic nuclei. They also present a new tool to explore gravity in its most extreme limit and on a mass scale that was so far not accessible.

..

Conclusion and Outlook (first 2 paragraphs).

We have assembled the EHT, a global VLBI array operating at a wavelength of 1.3 mm and imaged horizon-scale structures around the supermassive black hole candidate in M87. Using multiple independent calibration, imaging, and analysis methods, we find the image to be dominated by a ring structure of 42 ± 3 μas diameter that is brighter in the south. This structure has a central brightness depression with a contrast of >10:1, which we identify with the black hole shadow. Comparing the data with an extensive library of synthetic images obtained from GRMHD simulations covering different physical scenarios and plasma conditions reveals that the basic features of our image are relatively independent of the detailed astrophysical model. This allows us to derive an estimate for the black hole mass of M = (6.5 ± 0.7) × 109 M. Based on our modeling and information on the inclination angle, we derive the sense of rotation of the black hole to be in the clockwise direction, i.e., the spin of the black hole points away from us. The brightness excess in the south part of the emission ring is explained as relativistic beaming of material rotating in the clockwise direction as seen by the observer, i.e., the bottom part of the emission region is moving toward the observer.

Future observations and further analysis will test the stability, shape, and depth of the shadow more accurately. One of its key features is that it should remain largely constant with time as the mass of M87* is not expected to change measurably on human timescales. Polarimetric analysis of the images, which we will report in the future, will provide information on the accretion rate via Faraday rotation (Bower et al. 2003; Marrone et al. 2007; Kuo et al. 2014; Mościbrodzka et al. 2017) and on the magnetic flux. Higher-resolution images can be achieved by going to a shorter wavelength, i.e., 0.8 mm (345 GHz), by adding more telescopes and, in a more distant future, with space-based interferometry (Kardashev et al. 2014; Fish et al. 2019; Palumbo et al. 2019; F. List : EU laws that have been forced on UK against our will

The following article appeared in the London Economic website.  It illustrates the idiocy (my words) of the accusation by people that EU laws forced on us are all bad.  I’ve copied the whole piece and blogged it here – no copyright breach intended, but i wanted to do it this way so that if the original site-page goes, at least I have this  version saved up in my blog. -Mani

According to the commons library just 4,514 out of 34,105 laws have been influenced by the EU, of which just 72 of them were forced on us against our will.

They included regulations such as making sure food labels say if Aspartine is present, which has been linked to cancer, headaches and seizures, and banning carcinogenic residue in meat.

Others include making airlines compensate passengers for delayed or cancelled flights and making sure additives in mineral water are safe and labels are honest.

The full list, courtesy of Jim Grace, can be seen in his Tweets here (or see the full list which we have transcribed below):

So… what inequities were forced upon us, what degradation, what humiliations for a proud island nation? Let’s have a little look shall we? I have put a link to each law we voted “no” to… and my own TLDR, if you don’t fancy wading through the legalese….

Isidias Navigatum 2019: Goddess Isis Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony (Richmond, London)

This annual ceremony was held at the start of the Spring time in Ancient Egypt, to gain the blessings of Goddess Isis upon the ships and boats (Fleet) – so that they may go forth, find commerce, resources and wealth and bring them back.

Isias Navigatum - march 2019

This is a family friendly day-time ceremony by riverside. We will bless the `fleet’ and place our hopes and wishes of good fortune and success in the ventures we are starting as Spring approaches. We then set the ships to sail (some will be sent.. other larger models will be pulled back, so as not to litter river Thames).

Fee: £5 (£3 concessions). Children under 16 – FREE.

Ritual outline :

A statue of the Goddess will be carried to the water side. Women may offer mirrors so that Goddess Isis may see her beauty. We will pour milk on the banks then sprinkle the statue with precious perfumes & flowers. As the final part of the ritual, a small replica boat(s) will be filled with spices and other magical items, and placed in the river as an offering to the Goddess Isis. Smaller paper boats may also be placed in the river and let go off..

Bring your own small boats! Be it paper boats or small scale models – to either sail them on the river Thames afterwards, or to symbolically place them on our altar during ritual, to gain the blessings of Isis for your own ventures ahead in 2019.

meeting point:

Please gather by the Hollyhock Cafe , between 2.00pm to 2.20pm. (address: Hollyhock Cafe, Terrace Gardens, Petersham Road, TW10 6UX. )

We will cross the road to the riverside for ceremony, set up Altar on the model boat (group effort) and begin ceremony.

At the end of the ceremony our `ships’ will be set sail followed by Feasting. We expect to be back at station by 5pm .. and visit a cafe or pub to socialise (in warmth).

**Please wear absolutely sensible shoes, warm & water poof cloths** .. Our rituals go ahead whatever the weather..

All are Welcome to attend these .

Please bring Food & drinks to share. It can be a bottle of wine, soft drinks, hot drinks (in a flask), short eats, snacks, bread, butter, cheese, humus, cakes, salads, pasta and so on.

Bright Blessings
