Despair of a dedicated Counsellor in ToryLand

I saw this in the status update of a close friend in a social network site. She is a qualified Counsellor, a pagan, Trained Priestess of Avalon (in Glastonbury).. and has this to say about her volunteer work, the system and the State of things under our current Tory government.

“Today, I have been pondering my own attitude to work and having a ‘job’. I am working as a counsellor with the bereaved, the dying and gypsy travellers, dancing in the edge places where not everyone would want to go, climbing into Cerridwen’s Cauldron and sitting with the pain. I love my work, I work hard, and I have trained hard to feel that I can do it well and yet all my work is unpaid (apart from a very few private clients) and I live on very little in order to continue the work that I love and which is so important in a disconnected world. At the same time, three of the six full time paid counsellors in my workplace have been made redundant. This is David Cameron’s ‘Big Society’ writ large; where vital work is done by volunteers who then can’t afford to live, are forced to claim benefits or live on the edge of poverty, and are made to feel ‘less’ because of that. The alternative is for only the well off to provide these services and there would be such a loss of beautiful diversity and connection between people if that happened.

The Tories may think that this is a good ‘trick’, getting lots of us to do ‘free’ work, feel awful about ourselves at the same time, and have no energy or will to question what’s going on. But I think that this will backfire because people are beginning to question what work and community and money/abundance actually means. The very thing that is meant to crush us may be what helps us free ourselves from this spell of capitalism and disconnection.

In the meantime, I work as a counsellor and I am proud of it”   – JWS

The `pagan kidnap plot’ FLYER

Stop the Press!

The Journalist Katie was kind enough to provide PF London District Manager Mike with the flyer that had been anonymously circulated in the Epping Forest Area.  Below is a scanned copy below.

`Lammas day adduction plan’  – my phone interview/ online article

-“No Kidnap by Pagans”   – Printed version of the article in Epping Forest Guardian

Quite apart from the sheer lunacy of this claim, I can already (in the blink of an eye) see so many discrepancies in the claim made by the flyer’s contents. It rather looks like someone with half a knowledge looked up a whole load of disjointed pagan topics on wikipedia or something and created the flyer.   😛   I’ll address those points in another blog..  (Oh yeas, we pagans have a right to reply!)

Our sincere thanks to Katie for being so open-minded on this matter, and giving us sensible pagans an opportunity to respond.  Very well done Katie. Some of us are likely to nominate her for the special PF Journalist award (one that Boris Johnson was once awarded). More on that another time.

Meanwhile here’s the flyer.

`No Kidnap for ritual’ – Pagan article in Epping Forest Guardian paper 26July2012

Here’s the scan of the page 5 of the local Epping Forest Guardian newspaper, where the article about local pagans capturing a local man to sacrifice at Lammas (which I personally addressed) came out.

You can see my blog & link to the original online version of this article in this link.

Following the online version, Mike Stygal, Vice President of The Pagan Federation (and District Manager of PF London) contacted the journalist Katie Bamber, and offered additional insights and info, which have now appeared on the printed version of the article as an `info box’ .  I also understand that the journalist is happy to maintain communications with us (Pagan Federation) on any future pagan related matters – which is a success in itself for us Pagans.

An appeal:

If anyone has a copy of the said anonymous `flyer’ that initially stated that pagans were going to sacrifice a man in Epping Forest, can you please send me a copy so that I can display that here too..  for completion sake!  Thanks.

Mobile media enquiry I received & responded: ‘ridiculous’ claims of Lammas Day abduction plan

Earlier today (2:50pm 23rd July’12), I had a call on my mobile..  from a lady in Epping Forest area.

She claimed there had been flyers circulating in their area – that pagans are coming to take a local ma and sacrifice in a ritual for Lammas festival.  I went a bit intense, and said how ridiculous, and went on to explain my ex-position in the PFL (ex-Events Coordinator) and current Webmaster. I also explained my educational qualification (Physics degree) and said I have a good head on my shoulder, and that we pagans don’t do anything crazy like sacrificing people!

Anyway here’s what she appears to have written – and as usual with Journalists (understandable), only parts of a 15 minute conversation seem to have been written about. But apart from one potential misunderstanding, it looks okay to me.

Funny thing is I have only just seen this online. I thought it was going to be a printed paper later on.   In any case, earlier this evening, I had a funny psychic sensation..  almost like an intrusion that I had sensed in the past… and it now makes sense..  It would be the time (4.30pm) when this would have been published online…  (I was doing my art blogs then!).     Yeap, my `Spider sense’ was tingling…and I now have it calibrated `exactly’ for this sort of thing that touches me!!   That’s the biggest favour this event has done for me.

‘ridiculous’ claims of Lammas Day abduction plan

4:29pm Tuesday 24th July 2012 in NewsBy Katie Bamber

PAGANS have dismissed ‘ridiculous’ claims they plan to kidnap a member of the public as part of festivities in Epping Forest next week.

An anonymous leaflet stuffed through letterboxes on Epping High Street on Monday (July 23) warns of a Pagan ‘plan to abduct a male member of the public for use as part of their rituals’.

Pagans traditionally celebrate Lammas Day, the wheat harvest festival, from July 31 to August 1 – the mid-point between summer solstice and autumn equinox.

Mani Navasothy is a Wiccan High Priest and representative of the Pagan Federation, which works with the Government to create guidelines on recognising Paganism.

The 42-year-old has led several Pagan camps at Debden campsite and staged his wedding on the edge of the forest.

He said: “That’s just ridiculous. Nobody is going to catch a man and abduct him. I have got a degree in physics, so I’m not an idiot. Practising Pagans just don’t do that sort of thing.

“I myself have led rituals in forests and I used to tell the police and council – we always do it very carefully and formerly. If anything we just go for walks in the wood.”

Contrary to the leaflet’s claim that next week’s celebrations will involve ‘public nudity, unauthorized fires, sacrifices and heightened risk of kidnapping’, Mr Navasothy said they were likely to entail a ‘drama’-like ritual, with worshippers in masks and costumes acting out the cutting of the first wheat.

“We don’t do animal sacrifices and definitely not people. That would be criminal.”

Simon Webb, the Loughton-based author of Unearthing London: The Ancient World Beneath the Metropolis , said Epping Forest had been used by worshippers of Pagan gods since the Neolithic period.

“The main road from the Neolithic flint mines in Norfolk to London passed straight through Epping Forest and straight through Waltham Abbey,” said Mr Webb, 58.

“Travellers worshipped half-human, half-horned goats and took symbols of their religion with them.

“There are old roads leading through the forest made by Celts. They’re called ‘green lanes’, and they were used as old trackways.”

Mr Webb confirmed Epping Forest was still a draw for practising Pagans: “Not far from the Wake Arms roundabout, there’s a clearing with lots of symbols carved into the trees. You’ll also find traces of fires that have been burning there.

“I don’t doubt for a moment that on Lammas Day there will be people lighting fires and dancing round naked in Epping Forest,” he added.

Press release from CERN: Discovery of Higgs Boson

Here’s the formal press release from CERN’s website

<< CERN experiments observe particle consistent with long-sought Higgs boson

Geneva, 4 July 2012. At a seminar held at CERN1 today as a curtain raiser to the year’s major particle physics conference, ICHEP2012 in Melbourne, the ATLAS and CMS experiments presented their latest preliminary results in the search for the long sought Higgs particle. Both experiments observe a new particle in the mass region around 125-126 GeV.

“We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.”

“The results are preliminary but the 5 sigma signal at around 125 GeV we’re seeing is dramatic. This is indeed a new particle. We know it must be a boson and it’s the heaviest boson ever found,” said CMS experiment spokesperson Joe Incandela. “The implications are very significant and it is precisely for this reason that we must be extremely diligent in all of our studies and cross-checks.”

“It’s hard not to get excited by these results,” said CERN Research Director Sergio Bertolucci. “ We stated last year that in 2012 we would either find a new Higgs-like particle or exclude the existence of the Standard Model Higgs. With all the necessary caution, it looks to me that we are at a branching point: the observation of this new particle indicates the path for the future towards a more detailed understanding of what we’re seeing in the data.”

Preliminary evidence of Higgs boson

The results presented today are labelled preliminary. They are based on data collected in 2011 and 2012, with the 2012 data still under analysis.  Publication of the analyses shown today is expected around the end of July. A more complete picture of today’s observations will emerge later this year after the LHC provides the experiments with more data.

The next step will be to determine the precise nature of the particle and its significance for our understanding of the universe. Are its properties as expected for the long-sought Higgs boson, the final missing ingredient in the Standard Model of particle physics? Or is it something more exotic? The Standard Model describes the fundamental particles from which we, and every visible thing in the universe, are made, and the forces acting between them. All the matter that we can see, however, appears to be no more than about 4% of the total. A more exotic version of the Higgs particle could be a bridge to understanding the 96% of the universe that remains obscure.

“We have reached a milestone in our understanding of nature,” said CERN Director General Rolf Heuer. “The discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson opens the way to more detailed studies, requiring larger statistics, which will pin down the new particle’s properties, and is likely to shed light on other mysteries of our universe.”

Positive identification of the new particle’s characteristics will take considerable time and data. But whatever form the Higgs particle takes, our knowledge of the fundamental structure of matter is about to take a major step forward.  >>

My Quantum-magical work & Discovery of the Higgs Boson

Hi all,

as ya know ..am a big science geek at heart! 🙂  And ever since I accidentally read Paul Davie’s book on Quantum / Particles (in my Advanced Level days at school.. 1988-ish) I have been hooked on the wonder of it all..  It’s one reason I had a `last minute change of heart’ from studying Engineering at Uni and going for Physics (applied to Oxford Uni…didn’t get A/L grades, so went for King’s College London (Uni) and finally finished the degree at Birkbeck College (thank Birkbeck for giving me a last chance!)

Part of my quantum-magical work (reality shifts) involved image-magic like this.

Some years ago, in my early `pagan awakening years’  I was at a Witchfest Event in Croydon Fairfields Hall (around 2003-4?) and gave a talk entitled `Quantum Magic’.  I thought I’d be lucky to get 3-4 people in my talk.  But the room was packed with about 30+ people..!   The talk then focused around how us Science-interested magicians can use those ideas in our magical work.. !   People who were chemists, engineers and others listened to my talk. They said we should explore more.  So I set up a yahoo e-group for it.  Nothing much came of it, and I deleted that group.   (then in 2004, I had differences of opinions with Witchfest organiser and left that community…).

But my interest in this field – both scientifically and magically has continued privately…in reading latest science journals, and using them in my own magical works. I think only 2 people knew what I was upto..  my sister , and a non-pagan friend in the civil service where I used to work (till 2004?).

About 2-3 years ago, at a Beltane Bash festival in London, I gave a new talk called `The God Particle’.. explaining how the mysteries of science is where us magicians can pluck ideas and manifest our magic! I touched on dark matter & dark energy as potential carriers or links to even psychic energies / powers.  The idea being, if there are these elusive quantum-particles’ that carry various known forces, and rest of the force-fields are speculated and assigned hitherto undiscovered particles, there exists the possibility that similar ones may exist for carrying psychic forces or energies..  The fact that quantum mechanics suggests that observation affects results and position/location of particles ..to me suggests processes very similar to magic.. where the Will of the person affects outcome!!

Few years ago I became more serious about it all..  and started having the idea of writing it all down.  I called it, `Quantum Magic’ of course 🙂  Even this blog `QuantumPhoenix.net‘  is an echo of my old username in an old pagan forum (Witchcraft.org run by Children of Artemis).

The book has been planned for release later in 2012, around the next set of Eclipses (as this first set of Eclipses in 2012 saw the launch of  my book on other major personal work, `Eclipse Magic workbook’.

And so when I heard..few days ago (4th July’12) that the Higgs Boson had indeed been discovered (or rather statistical evidence for it has been confirmed to the highest certainty possible within experimental error parameters!)..I knew we have turned a corner..  not just for Science all over the Earth.. but on esoteric levels too.   It is a sign that I personally have been `intuitively’ waiting for.

A word on this science-magic/religion conflict. No doubt many Scientists would distance themselves from others who believe in magic. But truth is, many Scientists who have given fantastic theories ..have all had some sort of esoteric or spiritual belief systems. Richard Feynman tended to spend time with tribes, playing his bongos; Einstein enjoyed travelling on light-beams (creative visualisation) that led to him developing his theories.. Benzene ring came about because the Chemist in question was day-dreaming of snakes that suddenly ate it’s own tail!!

So, never mind the fact that Cern announced it on 4th July (US independence day!) That’s political synchronicity 🙂  That this announcement comes just after a recent uranus-square-pluto  &  jupiter-square-neptune aspects astrologically (both point to radical changes, innovation, technological jump, elusiveness, fluidic matters etc)- is pure magic to me!

Flower crowns & NEWS articles

Few weeks ago, a Journalist for the local News Paper in Enfield contacted my wife April. She was tracked down through the pagan monthly social gathering that April has been running in Enfield for over 3 years (Enfield Town Circle).

April Jonquil & Mani Navasothy in Enfield Gazette News March 2012

The Journalist wanted to interview us about the upcoming Christian Festival `Easter’ and wanted our view on older pagan festivals that take place at this time.  So we had some phone calls, and we told them about Spring Equinox and about Beltane, and the older festival of Ostara – all the symbols of which seem to have been nicely muddled up (cooked?) and fashioned into the `Easter’ celebrations of Christ’s death and resurrection!

Within few days of the call, we had an early morning photo-shoot in Enfield, by the canal, just near the Registry office. Few people who walked past us thought we had just got married – and wished us well.  Well, we were in bright cloths and were both wearing flower crowns 🙂  The photo shoot took place a midst newley bloomed Daffodils!

I must say, for April & my handfasting (pagan wedding ceremony that took place in Epping forest few years ago), the flower crowns were somewhat  lacking! We had wanted natural flora, but at the time, our friend who created a flower crown had made just one..  and what was natural in her harden at the time was a rose and a few flowers.  It had often upset my wife April to look at those photos – one large rose on her forehead.

So this time, I made a big effort- I used ivy and new strands of Willow, and wove some red roses, with an original red ribbon used in our handfasting ceremony to make the crown.  And I am pleased to say, April was happy. And being wished by passers-by, we almost allowed ourselves to believe that is was our wedding day!  But that of course, is yet to come! 🙂

PM David doing a Goliath in Hospitals

Prime Minister’s body language very Gung-Ho!!

Saw the News earlier this evening (6th Jan’12) – showed our Prime Minister David Cameron visiting a hospital, shaking hands with the nurses – something about cutting out the paper works that nurses face, so that they can spend more time hands-on with actual patients!  Let me leave the issue of PM barking up a tree that already has been barked at!   (Across the street, Guys Hospital Nurses gave an interview, saying they already have a system of reducing / monitoring their paperwork loads so they can focus on patients!)

What actually pissed me off was our PM’s body language!!   I’d seen this exact  scene before, on a previous of his Hospital visits which had media coverage.   In both cases, he had a white shirt on (not a crime) – with his tie tucked into front of shirt, and long sleeves of shirt rolled up to elbow height – all presumably for hygienic reasons, to avoid contamination?

Or a bloody visual statement  – “Look at me, I’m in the front line, in the trenches, ready to roll me sleeves and stand as one of you!”

In Hospitals, Mr Prime Minister, even Doctors wear long sleeves, and ties, and they don’t all roll it all up, especially when they are just doing walkabouts in admin areas, nurses desks etc. (I’ve been there, even watched an actual  minor surgery on a man’s brain..)

Stop playing to the media Mr.Cameron!   Unless you are actually in an Operating Theater in a hospital performing surgery, you don’t need to do all that rolling tie & sleeves routine!!
