Partial Lunar Eclipse – 7th August 2017 – what you’ll see & where

Hi all.. getting some advance info out for the next Lunar Eclipse (due in August 2017).  Here’s some graphics, based on NASA’s data.


The following is a world map showing  where this Partial Lunar Eclipse can be seen from (map by Fred Espenak of NASA).   Some parts of the world will see all of it.  Others will see only parts of it …either during their local moon-rise or moon-set moments.  It’s shown in the map.

Explanations about P1, P4, U1, U4 etc  (scientific terms):

The moment when an eclipse starts/  ends are given special names / tags in astronomy..   (they are moments of time..  ie Universal time/  GMT etc)…  and they are labelled P1, P2, P3, P3  for penumbral shadow sections of the eclipse, and U1, U2, U3, U4 for Umbral shadow parts of the Eclipse.

P1 is when Moon starts to enter the Penumbral shadow of the Earth.  Moon is seen as a reddish colour (aka The Blood moon)…but still fully visible.

U1 is when Moon further enters the darker Umbral shadow of the Earth..  This is where part of the moon will actually go black.. (This one is a partial Lunar Eclipse…So only a part of the full moon will disappear).

U4 is the moment when the moon fully comes out of any Umbral (dark) shadow of the Earth…but some parts of the moon will still be in the lighter penumbral shadow so will be seen as reddish.

P4 is the moment when the moon fully comes out of penumbral contact…  and end of the eclipse!

(note: Sometimes   the eclipse is only Penumbral..  so the data will be just P1, P2, P3, and P4).

Of course we still have a annular Solar Eclipse to come on this month – on 26th Feb 2017 (and then a Total Solar Eclipse, in August 20117).   I’ll provide diagrams/ details soon.
