- Millennium Bridge, Thames Embankment · London
On the Day of Leo New Moon, we unearth Sekhmet warrior Goddess, from the sandy shores of river Thames – honour her, and seek her powers & magic for Protection and Victory in our own lives! It’s no secret that Lion power protects London – as is evidenced by the hundreds of Lion figures, statues all around Town, not to mention the 4 Lions in Trafalgar square!
Our History of Sekhmet rituals – why we began
During Victorian era, it is said that one of the Sekhmet statues brought from Egypt, was ona bridge and fell into river Thames. Some years ago, we decided to enact this by sculptinga Sekhmet statue out of Thames clay, performed a ritual and then took it and sunk it gently into river Thames by Waterloo bridge! (Yes, Mani walked waist deep into river and laid the statue). It was called Submerging Sekhmet, and was done as protection .. following various attacks on London at the time. Few years afterwards, we decided to do a `Sekhmet Rising’ ceremony ina different way. We carved a larger sculpture and secretly burried her in the sands of river Thames. And in ceremony, we all `unearthed’ her and made offerings of beer and wine. Since then we have performed this ceremony every year.
Egyptian Mythology & context:
Sekhmet is said to be a lion-headed warrior Goddess. It is believed she was at war and in a frenzy of battle, lost her control, and began to kill all friends and enemies and drank their blood. Her terrified followers decided to fill barrels wih beer and colour it red, and placed them before the firece Sekhmet.. She drank them all and got drunk and eventually reached calm and balance.
It is for this reason that in our ritual, we pour beer and wine a plenty over her statue as offering.
Outline of Ceremony (varies) :
Once sacred space is set up with consecrations, there will be energy raising with some chants..followed by the `unearthing’ (digging out) of Sekhmet statue. Attendees may come to the altar to make a beer/ wine offering to the Goddess. This is followed by an empowerment invocation to call Sekhmet power into our selves.. Mani (facilitator) will lead all in some guided magical work, then let each person complete their own magic.
- Important: Bring some Beer, wine, Flowers as offering.
Then the sacred circle will be closed and feasting & socials will take place (optional).

About Paganism :
Pagans believe in the power of nature, and see the Divine as both male & female- as having many God & Goddess forms. Modern pagan practitioners use belief systems, images and symbols from ancient paths (Celtic, Egyptian, Druids, Witches, Mayans, Native Amerindians, Aborigini, Hindu,Norse and so on). Powers of elements — air, fire, water, earth, nature spirits, angels, dragons, fairies, spirit animals, ceremonial magic and more are all integrated in modern rituals.
About Wicca:
Wicca, a moder form of Witchcraft religion, was established by Gerald Gardner in late 1950’s in England (Gardnerian Wicca), then Alex Saunders (Alexandrian Wicca) with promient contributions from High Priestesses Doreen Valiente (mother of moder wicca) and Maxine Sanders. Wicca has a format of creating sacred space, consecrations, calling 4 elements, energy raising, then invoking Horned Good & moon Goddesses, followed by ritual magic! Wiccans celebrate the 13 full moons (esbats) and the 8-fold seasonal sabats – Imbolc, Spring, Beltane, Midsummer, Lammas, Autumn, Samhain, Yule.
