As New Year approaches, I like to share a small poem that came to me today.. and some related eco-thoughts and an oath I made almost 2 decades ago 🙂
“Here we are , You and me
Standing in the place of Ancient Trees.
What will we add to this World, pray tell
Make it a place of Heaven ..or Hell..? “
Many already know that I am a nature-worshipping, tree-hugging, storm-chasing, mask-making magician, ritualist, Scientist, and an Environmentalist!
Years and years ago, I heard the songs from The Gaia Album by Olivia Newton-John, and it’s probably one of those things that totally consumed me – the plea of the Earth and Trees (the way she sang them)..and made me a Gaia-Guardian!
There was also the Channel 4 TV mini-series `Merlin’ almost 2 decades ago.. starring Sam Neil as Merlin, reluctant boy who is mentored by Maab, Queen of the Fairies, to be at her side.. But Merlin rebels after seeing her selfish ways, and swears not to use his magic except to help, and to oppose her! There is a scene where he is seated in the forest floor, and makes a vow..!
So moved was I, that within moments, I had gone out to the garden, and on my Witch’s Knife (Athame), made a magical Oath to the Earth. (This is probably the first time I have ever shared this matter!)
Over the years, many related ecological and environmental concerns, campaigns, initiatives, plans & projects have surfaced or manifested from me..and those will continue..
So.. here as we stand at the end of 2013, what I called `The Year of the Witch’ – a difficult one personally, I think back to the one force that has always remained constant in my last 2 decades.. my love for the Earth!
I feel it every time I walk in the woods, and every time I step carefully and with reverence, into a hollow centred living Oak tree. How often do we as humans ever go back to being literally inside another living creature- apart from the first 9 unborn months of our lives? Only when we are inside a living Tree!!
To me, that is returning to the womb-like sanctuary of Gaia .. mother Earth.. more so than being inside a Cave!
As 2014 dawns, I remind myself of the oath!
