Defining terms: Nature, Natural & Artificial

DSCF5637I was having a discussion with some friends on a matter of `Saving the planet for the sake of our (future) children’ .. ¬†(Her’s was a well-written long post..but I can’t copy it here without permission..)

But here are some of my resulting thoughts…(thoughts in progress) ūüôā ¬† Note: Sections A, B & C are the 3 reply posts I made.. ¬†but of course there were interspaced with other people’s response too… Without those, this may seem a bit jumpy.. ¬†but these are all my thoughts…so these should flow..without too much jarring.. ¬†ūüôā

A. So many thoughts come to mind… here are a few in no order..

1) To me, concrete & plastic are nature too.. all the components for them as well as the creatures who created them all came from Earth..

2) Mars, Venus, meteors and all the other planets…yeah… nature too..!!

3) People feel they need to justify reasons for wanting to `save’ the planet/ animals etc.. My view is `i want to save them…because I feel it’s important.. my inner self or intuition or something inside is telling me it;s important..and that’s good enough’ – But if this needs to be reduced to some logical argument….well, then I say, I am a product of nature..I want to save nature…because that;s just nature wanting to save itself.. Or put another way, my hands go forward to protect my head when I fall..

4) Ofcourse this same sword cuts both ways.. ie.. If a person says, `i want all the resources for myself.. I am nature…so nature decrees that just one part of it wants it all’ – In such a case, we need a new card/ control on the table.. For example.. `altruism’ ..ie good of all… for the good of the future…etc.. ..In this sort of manner…we become like dogs chasing their own tails…sadly..

5) Everything that’s happening on planet earth is 100% fine.. because it’s all part of the Earth,,all part of nature.. even the crazy matter of , `humans are part of nature…humans want to destroy trees/ hunt elephants down. ie.. nature wants to destroy itself..

6) Ultimate point- when we talk of nature, we are going to have to define a boundary..ie `just the planet earth’, just americas, just the solar system..etc. We are also going to have to define a particular set of boundary conditions…ie time frame… species.. …Its all just messy..messy messy..

7) There are 2 ways out of this logical loops/mess (that;s my scientific term )

7a) Mankind must consider itself to be superior to all else …as an end point to evolution (?) and so take some sort of `dictatorship/ right to use/ right to abuse all else’ position over all else.. or

7b) Mankind must assume that it has some divine advise/connection/ right…and thus can assume that superiority to own/ use/abuse all else..

B. ¬†I wrangle with these on and on for years… and the final two points 7a) and 7b) are more of a despair…than any sort of inspiration There must be another idea/ thought/ point that must surely explain why we as part of the web of life should feel we want to save things…without necessary having to go down the track of ..it’s because humans is the ultimate.. I actually don’t believe we humans are.. It’s why I often refer to us humans as `the human animal’ to remind myself and others..that there is so much of the beast in us.. no matter what shinny suits we wear and what great skyscrapers we build to keep going up.

C.  To be honest, we have to go down the route of Einstein.. and define terms before we can go further.. as any discussion/ debate. argument can only be valid or meaningful within the context of a particular situation/ circumstance/ boundary.. So here goes my attempt.. Bear with me..

I have to start defining nature...and say that anything that exists naturally on planet Earth. But I run into the problem.. of now having to define what is mean by `naturally existing’ .. People tend to go for the idea that `anything that has not been tampered by humans’ is seen as `natural’ . But I have to argue against that.. If in a caveman situation, a caveman found a cave..picked up a stone nearby.. started hammering and carved out the cave a bit more clearly.. found fallen sticks..and put a front wall of sticks.. and made a home of it.. is that artificial or natural? That’s no different to the Beaver that builds a damn using sticks..

This leads me to key thoughts that we need to incorporate.. And that is one of `transformation’ ...`reversibility‘ and even `biodegradability’ ..

A substance that occurs and only changes state/shape/ configuration by elemental forces ..can then be called `natural’ . ie by winds, water, fire and earth. But if any living creature tampers with those substances ..and changes/ transforms the shape/state of the said substance..then it has to be considered `artificial’ .. This means the beaver’s dam and the modified cave of caveman are both artificial.. Now that is not satisfactory…we will agree (am sure)…but note that both can be reversed to some level.. Twigs can be dispersed.. Cave front can accumulate soil and dirt and solidify over time.. (reversibility).

So ..(big breath) we need something else.. and that brings me to tools.. & technology..

A stone or bone tied by sinew or vine to a twig becomes a low-tech axe. It’s a tool that can be reversed.. ie broken up back into component pieces..and then allowed for `nature’ to take its course..gradual degradation.. (this is where biodegradability comes in). ¬†If a living creature uses an object that is not part of its living body at the time.. then it’s using a tool…and it’s using technology.. And the low tech tools are reversible in themselves..as well as the transformation they affect onto other substances…But hi-tech tools.. reversible or not.. can effect transformation of natural substances that can not revert back to original natural states.. NOW THAT is what I will call artificial

(These Definitions and related explanations are written on the cuff ..might have some gaps …but the core idea is here). As I said, `thoughts in Progress’

Noise Pollution: Looking for Peace and Quiet in the Woods (and failing!)

Mani Navasothy present a brief rambling in the woods – about Pollution and state of the World!

I went looking for some peace & quiet in the woods near my¬†home- to do some training videos…and was so perturbed by the constant noise ..even in the woods…that I started recording my frustrations in a video!

I talk about noise pollution, light pollution, Electro-magnetic pollution and more (like all those thousands of pieces of machine/rocket debris that mankind left to orbit the Earth.. !). I also wonder about the state of the Earth, why not many of us are looking into the way spirituality might evolve..

And I invite you to write thought-provoking feature articles, essays, news items, eco-campaigns,or submit visionary art, poetry and more.. to GAIAN  TIMES eco-spiritual Magazine (free online).. As you know I started it 3 years ago (and registered as not-for-profit company)..

This Friday: Taiji Action Day in London for Dolphins

We all know by now (don’t you?) that there are so many action groups and campaigners – utterly distraught by the annual ¬†September to March killing of hundreds of Dolphins in Taiji Cove, Japan! ¬† ¬†The country states it’s an ancient tradition.. ¬†where Dolphin pods are ushered in from the sea int the Cove by boats..then people descend into the cove ..and start massacring the dolphins.. ¬†a sort of coming of age tradition for their people or something.

BUT reality is different!    Many discrete Journalists and activists have witnessed local zoo and park people monitoring from the shores..  later selecting suitable Dolphins for their respective water parks.. and rest are killed.

So here is the second annual big demonstration in Central London – outside the Japanese Embassy – to make our hard feelings known..and to urge them to top this barbaric `tradition’.

The organisers of this event have set up an event page in facebook..  with following details:

“Another event outside the Embassy of Japan in Piccadilly, London to protest the slaughter and capture of dolphins and small whales in Taiji, Japan. Remember to bring along posters and banners ūüôā megaphones, whistles and inflatables! ūüôā date is confirmed to be 21st February! Starting at 12 and finishing with a minutes silence and candles being lit around 6pm.” ¬† Facebook event page

Date:  Friday 21st Feb 2014

Venue: Outside the Embassy of Japan   (Piccadilly, London).  Nearest tube: Green Park

Eco-Guardians vs Warriors of the Rainbow? Some evolutionary thoughts

Rainbow Warrior - art- Mani N2013
Rainbow Warrior – art- Mani N2013

Few days ago, a friend wrote the following in her facebook profile:

“There will come a time when the Earth grows sick, and when it does, a tribe will gather from all the cultures of the World, who believe in deeds and not words. They will work to heal it…they will be known as the Warriors of the Rainbow. ¬† ¬† ¬†Mission..¬†Mother Earth..”

My thoughts were spurred on by this, and here was my response:

It’s not so much that the Earth grows sick.. but people are pissing in their own tents!! ¬†What the Earth needs is a bunch of intergalactic bulldozer-space ships to come down and flatten all the fowled up `human tents’ (people and their `products’) and push the whole damn lot over the cliff edge (that would be jettison the whole trace of humanity into the nearest nuclear furnace ..like the Sun). Then the skin of the Earth can heal itself.. !! We humans ..even the wonderful eco-warriors – have gotten that inner-arrogance, where we think we are going to be the grand-saviors of the Earth…¬†¬†Earth doesn’t need us..and it can exist in many different extreme states…and it will make no difference to it.. But it’s us people who need the ground …soil..water and warmth.. from the Earth!

I was writing it in a sort of tongue in cheek fashion, but trying to express my frustration and despair  at a) how one strand of humanity fowls up the Earth & environment..   and b) another strand thinks it is the savior!   (In all honesty, I would chalk myself closer to the second category!)

I would add the following remarks (seeing I get more space to do so in the blog than in a facebook reply

  • Already a whole bunch of people exist (the tribe) who believe in deed -and- words ¬†..and they do work to improve matters ¬† ¬†[they do things, as well as write about such things to promote/ educate/ increase awareness]..
  • Healing a wound – is not all that simple a concept (or clear cut, rather). ¬†If ¬†a living creature suffers a physical harm or damage, the body will try to repair itself ..But bacteria and other microbes get in and start to make the would worse.. ¬†Those microbes are just trying to get on with ¬†their own living! ¬† So with Earth! ¬† If humans have caused ¬†the previous `norm’ to be thrown off balance.. ir more carbon, dirty chemically polluted seas etc.. ¬† then some other life forms (other than humans) will take advantage of the `new environment’.. ¬†As far as Earth as a whole is concerned, it’s just reached a new balance.. ! ¬†Some life forms die, others thrive! ¬† In such scenario, `Healing’ is not required.
  • In some ways, we humans are a natural product of the Earth and evolution. And if we are polluting the planet…then sadly that’s also a result of the evolution (in a round about way). ¬†What’s to say where evolution will go? ¬†Perhaps out of those chemically polluted seas and grounds will emerge a new resilient species or two or hundred?!
  • Finally, I hate to call anything that has a peaceful or altruistic purpose by linking it to war…and warriors! Warriors of the Rainbow ¬†just implies a bunch of multicoloured body-painted warriors going to war! ¬† Let’s call ¬†them something else shall we? ¬† ¬†I prefer the name `Earth or Eco-Guardians’ ¬† (you can start analysing the word `Guardian’) ūüôā

So.. what do you think?

Majority of Europe votes to ban Bee-harming pesticide

Got this update from Greenpeace.. Very good news for the Bees.. and glad to see most of Europe being sensible. But shame our own UK rep didn’t shift. ¬†Here’s the good news from James Sadri at Greenpeace that came in an e-mail to me.. ¬†(am a supporter!)

———————————————

“….the majority of Europe voted to ban bee pesticides!

It’s the world’s first continent-wide ban on these chemicals and¬†it’s a moment our movement can be proud of.

Someone who has¬†nothing to be proud of is the UK environment minister Owen Paterson, who not only voted against the ban, but¬†lobbied on behalf of chemical giants¬†Syngenta and Bayer to try and stop it going through. Paterson in a private letter even promised Syngenta that his “efforts would intensify” in the run-up to the vote [1].

Well, Mr Paterson, you lost. The bees won.

We know the current UK government has a disastrous track record on protecting our world – from climate change to bees. That’s why¬†so much of our work on this campaign has focused on mainland Europe, where we managed to shift big countries like¬†Germany who yesterday gave the ban their critical backing. That‚Äôs what a global network allows us to do.

Although we’ve been working in Europe against these bee-killing chemicals for years, here are a few of the things we’ve done in the past two weeks:

  • Campaigning on the ground in 12 key countries
  • Massive banner dropped on Syngenta’s HQ in Basel, Switzerland on 17th April
  • Turning the Austrian ministry of agriculture into a giant honeycomb on 18th April
  • Protest with hives outside Syngenta’s annual general meeting in Switzerland on 23rd April
  • Giant banner on roof of Bayer’s annual general meeting in Cologne, Germany on 26th April
  • ‚ÄėFuneral for the queen bee‚Äô at a Bayer factory in the Netherlands on 26th April
  • Joint ‚ÄėMarch of the Beekeepers‚Äô with other campaigning organisations in Parliament square in the UK on 26th April

Although we failed to shift our UK representative Owen Paterson to support the ban, our movement still managed to shift the critical players across Europe and get the ban we all want.

And therein lies our strength. Like the bees who roam from field to field oblivious of the fences that divide their flowers,¬†we’ll go wherever we need to in order to protect our environment and the world we live in.

Yesterday we showed the real strength of our global movement and achieved a remarkable success. We need more of these. ..”
