Defining terms: Nature, Natural & Artificial

DSCF5637I was having a discussion with some friends on a matter of `Saving the planet for the sake of our (future) children’ ..  (Her’s was a well-written long post..but I can’t copy it here without permission..)

But here are some of my resulting thoughts…(thoughts in progress) :-)   Note: Sections A, B & C are the 3 reply posts I made..  but of course there were interspaced with other people’s response too… Without those, this may seem a bit jumpy..  but these are all my thoughts…so these should flow..without too much jarring..  :-)

IMG_20141119_150136

A. So many thoughts come to mind… here are a few in no order..

1) To me, concrete & plastic are nature too.. all the components for them as well as the creatures who created them all came from Earth..

2) Mars, Venus, meteors and all the other planets…yeah… nature too..!!

3) People feel they need to justify reasons for wanting to `save’ the planet/ animals etc.. My view is `i want to save them…because I feel it’s important.. my inner self or intuition or something inside is telling me it;s important..and that’s good enough’ – But if this needs to be reduced to some logical argument….well, then I say, I am a product of nature..I want to save nature…because that;s just nature wanting to save itself.. Or put another way, my hands go forward to protect my head when I fall..

4) Ofcourse this same sword cuts both ways.. ie.. If a person says, `i want all the resources for myself.. I am nature…so nature decrees that just one part of it wants it all’ – In such a case, we need a new card/ control on the table.. For example.. `altruism’ ..ie good of all… for the good of the future…etc.. ..In this sort of manner…we become like dogs chasing their own tails…sadly..

5) Everything that’s happening on planet earth is 100% fine.. because it’s all part of the Earth,,all part of nature.. even the crazy matter of , `humans are part of nature…humans want to destroy trees/ hunt elephants down. ie.. nature wants to destroy itself..

6) Ultimate point- when we talk of nature, we are going to have to define a boundary..ie `just the planet earth’, just americas, just the solar system..etc. We are also going to have to define a particular set of boundary conditions…ie time frame… species.. …Its all just messy..messy messy..

7) There are 2 ways out of this logical loops/mess (that;s my scientific term )

7a) Mankind must consider itself to be superior to all else …as an end point to evolution (?) and so take some sort of `dictatorship/ right to use/ right to abuse all else’ position over all else.. or

7b) Mankind must assume that it has some divine advise/connection/ right…and thus can assume that superiority to own/ use/abuse all else..

B.  I wrangle with these on and on for years… and the final two points 7a) and 7b) are more of a despair…than any sort of inspiration There must be another idea/ thought/ point that must surely explain why we as part of the web of life should feel we want to save things…without necessary having to go down the track of ..it’s because humans is the ultimate.. I actually don’t believe we humans are.. It’s why I often refer to us humans as `the human animal’ to remind myself and others..that there is so much of the beast in us.. no matter what shinny suits we wear and what great skyscrapers we build to keep going up.

C.  To be honest, we have to go down the route of Einstein.. and define terms before we can go further.. as any discussion/ debate. argument can only be valid or meaningful within the context of a particular situation/ circumstance/ boundary.. So here goes my attempt.. Bear with me..

I have to start defining nature...and say that anything that exists naturally on planet Earth. But I run into the problem.. of now having to define what is mean by `naturally existing’ .. People tend to go for the idea that `anything that has not been tampered by humans’ is seen as `natural’ . But I have to argue against that.. If in a caveman situation, a caveman found a cave..picked up a stone nearby.. started hammering and carved out the cave a bit more clearly.. found fallen sticks..and put a front wall of sticks.. and made a home of it.. is that artificial or natural? That’s no different to the Beaver that builds a damn using sticks..

This leads me to key thoughts that we need to incorporate.. And that is one of `transformation’ ...`reversibility‘ and even `biodegradability’ ..

A substance that occurs and only changes state/shape/ configuration by elemental forces ..can then be called `natural’ . ie by winds, water, fire and earth. But if any living creature tampers with those substances ..and changes/ transforms the shape/state of the said substance..then it has to be considered `artificial’ .. This means the beaver’s dam and the modified cave of caveman are both artificial.. Now that is not satisfactory…we will agree (am sure)…but note that both can be reversed to some level.. Twigs can be dispersed.. Cave front can accumulate soil and dirt and solidify over time.. (reversibility).

So ..(big breath) we need something else.. and that brings me to tools.. & technology..

A stone or bone tied by sinew or vine to a twig becomes a low-tech axe. It’s a tool that can be reversed.. ie broken up back into component pieces..and then allowed for `nature’ to take its course..gradual degradation.. (this is where biodegradability comes in).  If a living creature uses an object that is not part of its living body at the time.. then it’s using a tool…and it’s using technology.. And the low tech tools are reversible in themselves..as well as the transformation they affect onto other substances…But hi-tech tools.. reversible or not.. can effect transformation of natural substances that can not revert back to original natural states.. NOW THAT is what I will call artificial

(These Definitions and related explanations are written on the cuff ..might have some gaps …but the core idea is here). As I said, `thoughts in Progress’

All about BLACK-FRIDAY (quick explanation)

In a friends’ FB post I put this explanation up..and thought why not share it with everyone.  So here it is..  (open to corrections, if I have got it wrong).-Mani

`My american-grown friend explained it to me.. In America, Thanksgiving is the big `public/open/ all inclusive’ festival.. where everyone is invited to the meal.. (in comparison to X’mas where only close family is invited).. Both are equally big.. And their tradition is that until Thanksgiving is finished, no X’mas sales, decorations. trees or other initiatives even start! (unlike in UK when shops start selling xmas stuff in August!). Thanksgiving is the last Thursday of the month in November….and so the friday following it is where they start their big sales..(our equivalent of Boxing day).. It ‘s also when their first Xmas related sales start.

Black Friday

The reason for `black’ Friday..instead of pink friday or green friday or whatever is …until this point.. most shops are in the red with their accounts…and as sales start..they go from red to black So it’s actually a description in favour of the sellers and shops…

So there you go :-)

Tamil Heroes Day (for Sri Lankan Freedom Fighters)

QuantumPhoenix:

Apparently I share my birthday with Bruce Lee & Jimi Hendrix! What people don’t know is that it’s also the birthday of Prabaharan.. Rebel Leader/ Tamil Freedom Fighter ..who led the `Tamil Tigers’ in guerrilla wars against oppressive Sri Lankan governments & military for many decades…until few years ago..when he was supposedly killed by a massive army attack .. So today happens to be the `Ma Veeran Day’ meaning.. `heroes Day’ that Tamils all over the world mark ..with personal celebrations, prayers and cultural events, vigils and walks.. To share the day with him, who actually comes from the same little town where my maternal grandparents lived.. is perhaps one of my proudest things.. Long live the Revolution.. where ever it rises..!! May it always serve the people..!

Some 40-50 years ago, the Tamil people in Sri Lanka started to rebel against injustices, unfair treatments and ever growing prejudicial treatment against the Tamil minority. These began to escalate, as the Government with its control on army began to escalate its own campaigns! There is plenty of time for history lessons another time, but today – 27th November – has been a day marked by the surviving Tamil speaking people of Sri Lanka as the `Mahaveerar Thinam’ – meaning `Great Heroes (Warriors) Day’.

Few years ago, the Sri Lankan army made a concerted effort – resulting in the destruction of so many towns and villages, and the unjustified deaths of thousands of Tamil people in the northern part of Sri Lanka. Countries around the world, and indeed the United Nations itself has made many…

ETC: Enfield Town Circle – Pagan Moot in North London (13th Nov’14)

Enfield Town Circle - pagan moot-2014Enfield Town Circle- Pagan Moot.    This is Pagan pub moot (monthly social) that takes place in Enfield, North London (well, almost north London).  Established by April..way back in 2006, it’s a good social opportunity for new people to come meet & socialise indoors.

Originally held in another pub, ETC is now at Crown & Horseshoes- a lovely waterside pub. We often sit by the sofas near the large fire place (front, right) or by the cosy round tables in the rear dinning area). We tend to have debates & discussions on current pagan matters or topics of interest to members…and mostly socialise.

Here’s a video where April talks about the Moot

When: 2nd Thursday of every month

Upcoming dates:  13th November’14,   11th December 2014

Time: 7.30pm till about 11pm

Where: Crown & Horseshoes pub.15 Horseshoe Lane, Enfield, Middlesex EN2 6PZ.

Witchfest International – Wiccan Convention in London (15th November 2014)

Witchfest is an annual Gathering/ Indoor Festive event/ convention (in it’s 11th year). It is currently the largest Witchcraft Event held in the World, and takes place in Croydon, (South London) on the Saturday 15th November 2014. These events are organised by `Children of Artemis’. I started attending these from about 10 years ago – having been going to monthly pub moots and conventions- either as a  Speaker/ Workshop facilitator, or just as an ordinary paying attendee.  Few years ago, I co-manned a stall for `Pagan Federation London’  at the Witchfest.

Gossipers & Nay-sayers have in the past branded Witchfest events as `jumping in on the witchy bandwagons of popular TV shows such as Charmed & Buffy the Vampire Slayer of the 90’s. Others have smirked at it as just being full of teen wannabe-witches coming in their crushed velvet fancy dresses.

However, a look at any (past and present) scheduling will show – Witchfest hosts some very impressive talks and workshops by many of the leading and experienced Magicians, Ritualists, Authors..and Wiccan Craft Elders!!  Not only that, it also puts on a jolly good show of pagan and esoteric bands/ music groups (often in 2 different stages). And then there is the big New age/ Occult/ Esoteric market – shops and stalls – selling everything from magic wands, crystals, cloths, art works and more. The whole of Fairfield Hall (big place) in Croydon is booked for this annual Witchy extravaganza – and if you do down to Croydon town on that day, you are bound to see lots of Witchy-looking people out and about :-)    There’s also usually the protesting Christian groups (handful) outside the Hall – presumably fearing for all the witchy souls and wanting too rescue us all.

It’s always been a great festive event, and I shall be going with my friends..:-)

So here’s a quick look at what’s going on and some details

Light Relief: The Blog-Attack from last year (response to `Cybergod Cometh’)

Last year (March 2013) I wrote a blog post called  `Cybergod Cometh- What lurks within the World Wide Web’ .    It was an amusing conjecture mixed with a sort of humour that I posses which few seem to get (unless people are used to the kind of dialoguing that the late Issac Asimov- father of Robotic Laws, and Russell T Davies – previous show runner of the `new’ Doctor Who – cos my style somewhat started similar to theirs).

Cybergod Cometh (c) Mani Navasothy 2013

Cybergod Cometh (c) Mani Navasothy 2013

Imagine when I got this very abusive, highly patronising response from some random person out there in the internet!!   Well,  the point of a blog IS to touch those random people out there …But his post was just plain ridiculous.  I sat on it for ages..  It was so clear that he was so full of his own self-importance, that he failed to grasp the finer points of blog posting..  that we can express our thoughts, ideas, facts, figures or just anything.   What he also seem to have not paid attention to ..was my credentials – I have a Physics Degree, I am a Pagan Priest with quite a bit of spiritual depth, I do science-fiction fantasy  both fiction and artworks!!

So anyway, as I am declutetring, deleting old drafts and such..  I thought I;d actually share that lunatic’s abusive post – with its infinite number of spelling mistakes and drivel..   I have no doubt he was actually projecting his own ego-wanking onto me, rather than make a sensible response to my amused blog post.   (Oh..did I just insult him?  How unprofessional of me :-)

So, here’s the precious contribution from him..  (an exact `cut n paste’ copy)  so you can enjoy his woks and have a light relief.

“…….Are you aware of what some of us actually talks about at all, and beside, this childish rubbings of idiotic notions on issues you aparently dont know mutch about.

This article and you comment just underlines the lack of anything basicly, atleats the ability to think, outside the box, can you handle it.

This is what I putt inot the coscious equation against probbalilitys/posibillity.
The zero feild theory, and this site complelty parks the old dogmans and belife in the utterly simple Einstins mechanical world, where a bullet is all you have.
The old theory dont even come clse to this, witch I faind fare more accurate and describse the issue beyound what I have read for Years.

And beside, this drivel may impress yyour mother, but not me.

Do you know why I fand the shitt showelling is hillarious, and whats even wurse, the crittics are based on and comming from people not even knowing what the f… some of us are talking about, you have no f… clue.

Do you.

I was intending to be polite, but I forgott it, sorry but when new ideas are introduced, be shure that you actually know what you know your self, then talk.
To me qurious is good, this is just premature ejaqulation of oral smapms.

Doctor Who Fan Filming at Windsor, UK (Imaginarium Productions)

On 30th October 2014, my friends and I drove up to Windsor Town – yes, same place where Royal Windsor Castle is!    It was for filming scenes of one of our  fan DrWho video stories – previously called `CyberGenesis’   (I;ll come to that in a bit).    The story involves  `our’ Doctor  suddenly appearing (No TARDIS)  in Windsor, and getting caught up in a plot by a mysterious villain called The Shaman – who seems to have found the perfect way to blackmail the Doctor – and force him to steal an artefact from  Windsor Castle itself!!

We filmed outside the castle, and then went to the Windsor Great Park – that’s a great big forest!    To do more location shots..   Filming continued few days later in another woods..

Here’s a short fun video that my sister filmed of us  (cast and crew) on that day in Windsor. :-)

And now here’s the exciting bit..    We are almost close to wrapping up the filming for `this’ series…(7 stories)..and will soon start editing and uploading online- where you can watch it for free (from late November onwards!)

That’s not all..    We start pre-production on the `next series’ to be  filmed from Spring 2015 onwards and shown  from early Summer 2015.       I say `series’ but to be honest, it’s a rolling schedule..    We’ll fil, edit and show..and film..and onwards..   As and when our stories are complete.    We are entirely dependant on friends’ and fellow fans’ support, participation and even creative contributions..

ps.   The story we are filming is no longer to be titled as `CyberGenesis’. This is due to the shocking discovery that the BBC’s own Doctor Who story `Dark Water/ Death in Heaven’ starring Peter Capaldi as The Doctor – showed very similar concepts to our original version (which we had been writing/ working on since December 2013!!!     If we carried on the same ideas, fans would be  bored, or might say, they copied the BBC’..  So we have had a rethink and are changing some of the concepts..   and removing the emphasis on The Cyberman..and putting it on…Hern..  a horned God/ mythological figure that roams Windsor Great PArk..

World War Remembrance Day – 11th November (Gaian Times #6 feature)

April Jonquil – daughter of an Arm Gal – wrote an article in GaianTimes Magazine#6 (November 2012) ..as a featured piece to mark the Remembrance Day (11th November). In the article, April made many observations with regard to how her late mother had worked in the Land Army (UK) and then subsequently  held  that with a personal honor and regard.

GaianTimesMagazine6-Winter2012-cover2

<Mum was in the RAF and ‘our Vera,’ as mum would say, was the lady who sang of romance and hope that helped keep up the morel of the soldiers. She would visit our soldiers abroad and sing songs of love and peace to bring our boys home.  ‘And the Nightingales sang in Barkley Square…’ -Mum would often step into a moment of nostalgia and break into song.

Then l spotted an old tambourine that reminded me of The Salvation Army who would march down our street and wake us up on a Sunday morning, They were always led by a lady playing a tambourine, followed by the trumpet players and the drummers, all out of sync. By the time the elders had taken a deep enough breath to blow their trumpet they had gone out of tune. It was a right old racket but we loved them all the same. Well, a least mum did! And she so loved military brass bands and she had this thing of wanting to suck a lemon in front of one. They can’t get you for thinking,’ she would say. l guess it was the rebel in her.  Or maybe she just wanted them to sound home from home.

As I passed by my local supermarket on the way home l saw The British Legion out in force! Their poppies at the ready, made by volunteers who believe in the cause they stand for. The colour red spreading out across the nation, reminding us of what our battles and personal battles are all for. Our coins and hopefully notes are slipping inside those containers. The coins give off their own sound, while notes stay silent. We wait and watch to make sure the volunteers see it go in the box as we want nothing in return but that extra special smile! The smile that say thank you it is all worth standing, freezing my butt off hour after hour.

Children are encouraged to take money into school to buy a poppy, as the word ‘donate’ seems to be fading. I remember one of the children l used to work with coming home from school with a flower she had bought from a charitable organisation. She couldn’t remember the charity for which it was for as that wasn’t important, just the fact that she had a flower the same as everyone else in the school. Her brother complained as to why she hadn’t bought him one too. ‘But l only had a pound,’ she said…>
